Costly Tabernacle stones lie unused

THE 120-year-old columns of a building once dubbed Swindon’s St Paul’s Cathedral are lying out of public sight.

The remains of the tabernacle stones, which formed part of the historic Baptist Tabernacle, in Regent Street, were bought for £360,000 by Swindon Council in 2006.

The council hoped to include the stones as the centrepiece of a £215m regeneration plan for Swindon’s town centre, and had a guarantee it would be reimbursed for the cost of the stones by development partner Modus.

However, Modus went into administration in June of this year, and the stones have been left in storage at the Wroughton Science Museum.

Council leader Rod Bluh said he hoped to secure a deal with any new developer which would cover the cost of the 200 tonne stones.

He added: “To me getting these stones was a very symbolic thing about recognising the mistakes of the past.

“We have knocked a lot of old buildings down here in Swindon - and it really strikes a chord with the older generation who remember the building.”

However, his administration has been criticised for spending the six-figure sum on the monument as opposed to on schools or easing congestion.

Coun Des Moffat (Lab, Western), said he believed the council has lost out on more than £75,000 in interest it could have earned by not spending the £360,000.

He said: “What development company is going to want to put these lumps of rubble in their shiny new development?

“Those stones have been sitting at the science museum for three years, meaning the pile of money they spent on them has been sitting there too.

“Swindon has a need for this capital money in countless areas including fixing schools, and vital work to reduce congestion at Bruce Street Bridges - but now because of one man’s day-dreams it could very well be lost.”

Coun Derique Montaut, the leader of the opposition, said: “Rod Bluh should have had a contingency plan.

“You can’t spend this kind of money and not expect there to be hiccoughs.

“If you do it is at your own peril – which Coun Bluh now realises.”

Coun Bluh said: “I have no regrets whatsoever – I am prepared to be judged on this.

“This is not how we all would have wished it but it about being positive and moving forward.

“I am confident the stones will form part any revised scheme on that site and we are already working towards that end.”

Good intention without any common thought to it. That's basically what puzzle me in Swindon - tearing everything down, without having the contracts with the investers in place. I know, that the SBC tries to "bait" investers with this methodology, but it just makes Swindon so much worse. I personaly think, that the town centre does not need an aweful load of new buildings (high rise building as prefered by the SBC), it needs inteligent investment - but hey, what am I talking about - town centre looks great with the likes of the Jury Hotel, Debenhams, former Thistle Hotel, Zurich Buildings, Holiday Inn and I especialy like the great Brunel Tower - what an eyesore. Looks rather like a trading estate than a town centre. Maybe they should build a factory there... At least it would create jobs! Rarly seen such a bunch of plonkers in charge of a council.

Foresight was used in this purchase just like Murray-John used when buying Lydiard Park for the people of Swindon - The stones will be used but when the time is right.

I would rather this purchase for the future than financing the Radio 1 weekend in May that cost even more I expect.

Forget the Town Centre as we once knew it - times have changed, businesses are sited out of Town - who knows we may one day have a fantastic large Theatre which these stones could adorn - anything better than attracting 'big stars' to the old Oasis (built as a swimming pool and sports centre) which just signifies what Swindon is all about.

Well said Janais!!! And I hope, they will make good use of the stones - the town desperately needs a few eyecandies and a theatre would be great as well - culture in Swindon - what a thought - maybe it becomes reality one day!!

Problem is Janais, that it is this administration, led by Bumbling Bluh, that spent almost a million pound on stones and that concert, while closing the park and ride, shutting libraries and failing to deliver on the development - meanwhile promising the world. Don't let the door hit ya on the way out.

security word says it all - huge-bone

Could the journo please provide a source for this errant nonsense or is it just made up?

I think it`s time Swindon was recognised for what it is and not for planners on the council to attempt to change it. Culture in Swindon ? Probably never ! I expect 50% of people stopped in Regent Street dont even know where The Town Gardens are ! I`m sure even more dont want expenditure on a canal through the central area or a reinstatement of the Baptist Tabernacle in any form.

The cost of buying and storing these stones are worth every penny! i would like to see them forming a circle in the middle of the magic roundabout, wow! that would be great!!!!

“We have knocked a lot of old buildings down here in Swindon - and it really strikes a chord with the older generation who remember the building.” ..........We can't even restore those that haven't yet been demolished i.e. Old Town Corn exchange, Mechanics Institute. Even the old laundry in town I believe there was talk of demolishing this.

Where is he banking to get that sort of interest rate?
