A MAN was killed and another seriously injured in an horrific three-vehicle pile-up in Wroughton.

The fatally injured man, who had not been named last night, was dead at the scene.

The crash between a car and two vans caused lengthy traffic hold-ups yesterday afternoon with cars travelling bumper to bumper through the village.

One man was thrown from the blue Citroen Saxo in the accident and the other had to be freed by Wiltshire Fire and Rescue service using hydraulic cutting equipment.

The injured man, believed to be in his 30s, was taken to Great Western Hospital with suspected facial, chest and abdominal injuries.

The other, believed to be in his 20s, was dead when paramedics arrived.

The collision, involving a blue Citroën Saxo, and two vans including a red Ford Transit, happened in Wharf Road near Junction 16 just after 3.30pm.

Two ambulances and two response vehicles attended.

The road remained closed as the Adver went to press, as did nearby Hay Lane.

Wiltshire Police set up a diversion through Mill Lane lasting several hours.

Victoria Eld, of Great Western Ambulance Service, said: “We received a call at 3.34pm reporting a serious collision in Wroughton.

“We mobilised two ambulances, an emergency care practitioner and an ambulance officer.

“Sadly, one of the patients at the scene had suffered fatal injuries and was dead when we arrived.

“The other man complained of chest and abdominal injuries and was conveyed to hospital.

“Our condolences are with the family of the deceased man at this very sad time.”

Yesterday’s accident is not the first serious collision at the notorious blackspot.

A driver was taken to hospital with serious head injuries on May 26 last year, after a road accident along the same stretch.

The blue Vauxhall Corsa was travelling along Wharf Road from Wroughton towards Junction 16 of the M4 when the vehicle went off the road and landed on its roof.

Another passenger was also taken to hospital after the accident, which took place at 8.25pm.

Wroughton Parish Council has since considered plans for a pedestrian crossing along the road after residents raised concerns about the speed of traffic along it.

At a meeting held on June 15, councillors pointed out the idea of a crossing in Wharf Road had been requested before, but with no success, although a crossing by the Infant School had been installed.

The Parish Council agreed it would pass on the request to Swindon Council.
