A FIFTH of Swindon primary school pupils have failed to achieve Government targets in maths and English, league tables will reveal today.
The top scoring primary schools in the town at Key Stage 2 Standard Assessment Tests in English, maths and science will be revealed in league tables.
Seventy-nine per cent of 11-year-olds in the town reached level 4 or above in maths, 81 per cent in English and 89 per cent in science this year.
The Government expects 10 and 11-year-olds to achieve Level 4 or above at Key Stage 2.
More than a quarter of pupils – 26 per cent – in Swindon failed to reach that standard in both maths and English.
The aggregate of scores for pupils in maths, English and science was 250, down from 252 last year.
Catherine Wayte headteacher Laura Brierley is pleased with pupils’ performances in science and maths but is concerned about marking of English papers.
She said: “This is a school where standards tend to be high.
“Once again this year in maths and science our results are above average.
“However, our English results in writing were below expectations.
“We asked for several English papers to be remarked.”
