THE Bishop of Swindon will get on his bike on Thursday on his way to a massive climate change demonstration in London on Saturday.

A “Blue Wave” of 50 cyclists will be leaving Bristol earlier the same day, and after a lunch time stop at the Pilgrim Centre in Swindon town centre they will be heading off again at 1pm.

The United Nations climate change summit begins in Copenhagen this coming weekend.

And the Bishop, the Right Rev Lee Rayfield, pictured, will be cycling with the group from Bristol.

“Our Government needs to appreciate how concerned ordinary people are about the impact of climate change on our planet.

“They need to hear our voice urging them to take the tough decisions in Copenhagen and I hope and pray that this cycle ride will amplify that voice,” he said.

Chris Dobson, who is organising the bike ride, said: “It has been described as ‘the most important meeting in history’ because it needs to come up with a legally binding deal which will reduce the world’s carbon emissions and prevent global temperatures rising by more than 2°C.

“If it fails to do this we may be facing climate catastrophe within decades.

“Our bike ride forms part of a global effort to make it clear to the world’s leaders that millions of people are expecting radical decisions to be made at the summit.”
