TWO SCHOOLS run by the same headteacher are among the top three primaries in Swindon, results of league tables show.

Moredon Primary School has been ranked 1st for the performance of 11-year-olds in SATs while Rodbourne Cheney Primary School has come third in the performance tables. Both schools are headed up by the same headteacher Lauren Connor and governing body.

Haydonleigh Primary School has grabbed the second spot in the league table after 98 per cent of 11-year-olds reached the expected standard – Level 4 – in English and science, with 93 per cent hitting the mark in maths.

The Government expects 11-year-olds to achieve Level 4 or above at Key Stage 2.

Haydonleigh headteacher Frances Billinge said: “We are obviously very pleased to be second in the table – it is a reflection of the hard work of pupils and efforts from staff.

“But Sats are only one measurement of this. We are just proud of all of the achievements of all pupils – to be second in the league table is a bonus – but we don’t work towards achieving that – we do our best.”

The Haydon Wick School celebrated an outstanding Ofsted last year and Mrs Billinge puts its success down to teamwork and knowing children well.

Every pupil at Moredon Primary achieved Level 4 in maths and science in May – catapulting the school to the top of the league table. Ninety two per cent of pupils hit the grade in English. All of Rodbourne Cheney’s pupils reached Level 4 in science, with 90 per cent making the grade in maths and 97 per cent in English.

The school’s chairman of governors, Ian Cooke, said: “We are absolutely delighted and very proud of all the staff and pupils for their hard work. The federation of the two schools is working very well.

“At the end of the day we are delighted for the children – they are getting the best education.

“We have always been close to the top in previous years but this is the first time we have had them both in the top three.”

Schools’ positions in the league table are based on the total of the percentages of children achieving Level 4.

Brook Field Primary School, Shaw, has come fifth in Swindon Key Stage 2 performance tables while Nythe Primary School has come fourth.

Brook Field deputy headteacher Daniel Clarke said: “Obviously we are delighted with the results and the progress children made. It is the culmination of a lot of work from foundation stage all the way through. But this is only one form of measurement and we don’t want that to detract from other things going on in our schools and others.”
