A TRAINEE hairstylist has reached a competition final after wowing judges with a Billy Idol-themed hairdo.

Marco Recchioni has only been a trainee for three months but faced competition from 50 other hairstylists in London to claim a place in a national final.

The 22-year-old, who works for Hairworks salon, in Freshbrook, West Swindon, researched current fashion trends to come up with a hairstyle combining the look of actress Brigitte Nielsen and rock star Billy Idol.

He said: “It was great fun. The hairstyle was quite big and high. I looked at Milan Fashion Week and London Fashion Week for ideas.

“There was no detailed brief for the competition with nothing set in stone. I could create what I wanted.”

Marco is taking part in a trainee scheme run by Saks Hair And Beauty, which organised the competition.

He coloured the model’s hair blonde and cut it short at the back with volume and length at the front during the competition held in Saks salon in Covent Garden, London. The look was finished by the model wearing a mix of retro and high street clothes.

Saks challenged competitors to research current fashion trends and create an innovative commercial look for 2010.

Marco will find out if he has won in January and intends to enter more competitions next year.

“It is just a waiting game now until next month,” he said. “I want to enter more competitions if I can and keep improving. I am having a great time – absolutely brilliant. I enjoy working with short and long hair as well. I am still learning at the moment.”

He said the 1980s look is coming back for hair.

“Shoulder pads and skinny jeans are in fashion at the moment,” he said. “Hair is staring to reflect that – there is a lot of volume and hairstyles are very big.”

Hairworks owner Anne Pileggi said: “Obviously we are delighted and so pleased for him. He has done very, very well and put a lot of hard work into it.”
