A women’s football team got together to ensure children in the Great Western Hospital still get a good Christmas.

Swindon Supermarine Ladies’ Football Team, based at Hunts Copse, in Supermarine Road, South Marston, raised more than £300 through a raffle, which they used to buy gifts.

They bought a range of items, from teddy bears and chocolates for the younger children, to cinema vouchers and aftershave for the teenage boys.

These were given to patients on the Great Western Hospital’s children’s ward yesterday.

The brains behind the scheme was Supermarine player Kayle Smith, who is employed as a youth worker.

Miss Smith, 21, from Old Town, said: “I just wanted to get involved somehow with the community, especially round Christmas, and working with young people I just thought of the young people who aren’t able to spend it with their families.”

The main raffle prize was a teddy bear from Hamleys dressed in a custom-made Supermarine Ladies’ Football Team shirt.

The team practices on Wednesdays and plays matches on Sundays.

There are 24 squad members aged between 16 and 25 and although the club is only two years old it has already been promoted to the Gloucester Ladies Football and is topping its table.

The team now hopes to be promoted to the South West Ladies’ League.
