CHRISTMAS will come to the homeless of Swindon thanks to the generous public.
Organisers of Christmas Cares, a charity providing shelter and food for rough sleepers over the festive period, put out an appeal because they were low on donations. And yesterday, Christmas Cares chairman Patsy Moloney said they had been inundated with items. He said: “We’re very busy, it’s been brilliant, really good. We’ve got about the same amount as last year, you’d never know there’s a recession on.”
This is the 21st year of the Christmas Cares project, which runs from 2pm today until the morning of Monday, December 28, providing homeless and lonely people with somewhere warm to sleep along with food and comforts. Last year the charity served more than 500 meals throughout the time it was open, including 70 turkey dinners on Christmas Day.
This year 130 volunteers will be working in shifts at Queens Drive Methodist Church, off Queens Drive, Park South.
As part of the service a minbus will run between the church and the Pilgrim Centre a few times a day. People living in bedsits are also welcome.
Any left over food will go to the Breakfast Club at St Luke’s Church Hall on Broad Street, the women’s refuge, the Salvation Army homeless hostel or Culvery Court and the Pilgrim Centre. For more information visit www.christmascare.co.uk or ring Mr Moloney on 01793 642368.
