All change for the old Woolies store

WOOLWORTHS’ former Swindon store has reopened after department store Bhs moved in.

Woolworths closed its doors on its Swindon store exactly a year ago after the company went into administration at the end of 2008.

The premises have been empty until this week when Bhs relocated yesterday to the Regent Street building.

The move is only temporary as the old Bhs store in Bridge Street is to be demolished as part of a £25m town centre development.

A multi-million pound store is due to rise from the ashes involving Bhs, Top Shop and River Island.

The work is being done by UK Commercial Property Trust and its development partners, Shearer Property Group (SPG), which is sending the bulldozers in to demolish the existing Bhs store and make way for 80,000 sq ft of prime new retail space – the equivalent of two football pitches.

The unit on the corner of Bridge Street and The Parade will form a new 10,000 sq ft flagship store for Top Shop. Another flagship store of 9,000 sq ft has been designed for River Island. Only four units now remain available to let.

Swindon Borough Council granted planning permission in last May enabling UKCPT and Shearer Property Group to proceed with the project.

The new Bhs store reopens in spring 2011 and Top Shop will open later this year.

Jeremy Sutton, a partner in Swindon chartered surveyors Keningtons, said it was great news for Swindon and especially the town centre.

“With the collapse of the Modus proposals for the town centre development this is exactly the good news that Swindon need. Not only have we got the promise of a really good new store, the old iconic Woolworths building has got a new lease of life.”

Guy Shearer of SPG said: “In this challenging economic climate, we are delighted to announce the start of this important redevelopment – it will transform this prime corner in the heart of Swindon’s retail hub.

“The news that Bhs, Top Shop and River Island will all take new flagship stores demonstrates retailer confidence in the future of Swindon.”

Sustainable rail and road links & parking hold the key to the next generations of shopping venues and not the traditional old fashioned Town Centres.

I do hope this was considered before embarking on this extravagent project.

Has anyone noticed how despite the broken paving slabs, pools of filthy rain water, uneven and dangerous surfaces, ever present and constantly moving 6 foot 'safety' fences in our town centre, nothing actually seems to be being done?

You go that right, but I bet they have spent a ton of money from the budget already !!!

Doesnt seem much return for £4m does it? I counted 3 blokes in high vis jackets standing around this morning doing nothing and a white transit van with a couple of blokes drinking tea in it whilst reading the Sun. Well done SBC another winner.
.
Actually that not quite true, someone has dug another random trench presumably so that once infilled it can be poorly covered with more substandard tarmac.

Bhs, Top Shop and River Island in the new mutil million pound complex...quality NOT. Are Poundland also relocating there?

The town centre will be crap unless we can get better department stores (John Lewis or even a full fat HoF back), and more varied shops for a better consumer experience. I'd rather stick with Cribbs - free parking as well

Captain Sensible I think you will find that they have almost finished the canal walk 'improvements'!

Fairly shocking usr of govenment money once again - the new paving has already discoloured and looks drab and poor quality. Doesn't look much better than before does it. once final legacy gift from the New Swindon Company and their team of designers.

Good one NSC. Will now just await the final piece of the jigsaw - the iconic 'green wall' - what a joke that will be.

Have you seen the area around where the old 'millenium clock' used to be? It looks like a WW2 bomb site!

LOL at Captain Sensible and his Pick 'n' Mix.

Don't think they've quite finished messing with the paving!! Check out their road closure list & substantial road closures. Seems we're going to get months of it. Personally I cannot see what was wrong with the old paving

These have been there since before Christmas. Just what is being done there?

I also wondered where the clock had gone i.e. the one that looks like a football stuck in a tree?

Only thing to improove the town centre is a big bulldozer right down the middle!!!
It's an unattractive and dated place to shop.
