PANCAKE flippers put their toss to the test at Swindon’s third annual retailers’ pancake race.
Around 16 teams greased their pans and braved the morning drizzle in a bid to win the much coveted golden frying pan first prize But it was Regent Street’s WHSmith team who led their company to victory, battering the competition and leaving fellow challengers decidedly flat.
The event took place under the town’s big screen in Wharf Green.
More than a hundred spectators turned out to cheer on their teams, which included Mi Shake, Animal, Shakeaway, Lush, Wilkin-sons, in-Swindon Caretakers, Revolution, Yates’s and McDonald’s.
Simon Jackson, inSwindon chief executive, said: “We were delighted with the turn out for this year’s race which is getting increasingly popular and more competitive every year.
“Sixteen teams of retailers braved the elements for a bit of good clean fun and I’d like to congratulate the team from WHSmith who grabbed the now much coveted Golden Frying Pan award.
“Perhaps the runners up, Sports Soccer and The Sir Daniel Arms, will get their revenge next year.”
Suzy Johnson, event organiser, said: “The weather conditions weren’t great, but the winning trophy has become a coveted award, and the teams were determined to take the title away from last year’s winners, Swindon 105.5FM.
“It wasn’t easy, because the ground was wet and when the pancakes were tossed but didn’t quite make it back into the pan again, they were breaking up in the rain.
“But the retailers did really well, and 26 pancakes later we had a clear winner and runners up.”
