OU can tell a lot about a takeaway pizza place from its garlic bread, I reckon.

Pizzas are much of a muchness - I certainly couldn’t tell a Dominos from a Chicago Jo’s - but garlic bread is the make or break component for me. Dry and crispy just doesn’t cut it, thick and juicy does. And since Herbies’ garlic bread is possibly the thickest and juiciest I’ve ever had, I’ll be straight back on the phone the next time I can’t be bothered to cook.

The calzone-style bread (£3.25) - basically a pizza base folded in half - oozed garlic butter and cheese when we split it open and could have been a meal in itself.

Personally, I’d have been happy with just that, and lots of it, but unfortunately everyone else thought the same and there was just enough for half of one each.

I got my first experience of ordering online at Herbies, and was impressed by the bright and breezy website and how easy it was to pick a time slot and select a deal.

There are too many cut-price deals to mention here, but suffice to say, whatever combination of pizza, side orders or drinks you want, you’ll find a deal to suit you.

We went for a double decker - order one large pizza and get another half price - and there was more than enough to go round.

Pepperoni Plus came with (you’ve guessed it) double pepperoni, as well as mushrooms and bacon, while the Hawaiian (ham and pineapple) we ordered arrived with the requested sweetcorn on just one half. It was still piping hot when it arrived and very tasty.

The potato skins side order also proved popular, especially with the garlic and herb dip that came alongside.

Swindon has a fair selection of takeaway pizza places now, and competition is notoriously fierce. For its garlic bread alone, Herbies deserves to be up there with the best of them.
