‘We mustn’t give up on university dream’

SLASHING the government funding for Swindon’s first university campus has been labelled as “absolutely crazy” by the councillor in charge of the town’s regeneration.

Coun Phil Young, cabinet member for culture, regeneration and economic development, has spoken of his disappointment at the news that central government will be cutting funding for new universities by around £950m meaning the University of the West of England (UWE) will no longer be building a new campus in Swindon.

But he believes it is not the end of the road to get a university presence in the town as there are other options.

“It is absolutely crazy that there is no university presence in a town the size of Swindon,” he said.

“What is very frustrating is that the bid we had was one of the strongest in the entire country.

“We were shortlisted for the next stage of development because the bid was so good.

“It is important to say that this is not the end of the road for a university presence here, this is just another hurdle.”

Coun Young said there were two options to explore.

The first would be to work closely with Swindon College and New College to set up accredited university courses. These would be run in-house and would see students working towards university qualifications.

He said the second would see the establishment of Continuing Professional Development schemes – whereby businesses in the town would work in partnership with the university to allow employees to work towards a university accredited course.

During the Coate inquiry last year, where the plans for housing and a university campus were rejected on appeal, UWE bosses said they had already contacted a number of the town’s businesses including Honda, Motorola, Zurich and the Science and Technology Facilities Council.

Coun Young said he did not want the people or businesses in Swindon to give up on the project altogether.

He said: “This is too an important issue for us to let go of – this is just another hurdle along the road. We must not give up.

“We are still very committed to this project.

“This would be hugely beneficial to the people of Swindon and its future generations.”

It all seems to be dreams with the Council at the moment. Canals, useless computer systems, Corn Exchange development, collapse
d development schemes with suspect partners,The University ,that let housing developers think that they could get into Coate.
Councillors getting involved in management roles for which they have no training or experience has been a disaster-With both parties.

Swindon is so good at opening new schools, but when it comes to higher education and its integration with business partners such as Zurich, Honda, Nationwide, Lucent etc...there is zero momemtum.
Swindon could for example shine in new technologies rooted in its glorious industrial past: Robotics, metallurgy (alloys etc), electronics, programming etc....
Sad to see that our council do not think our youngsters have the capacity to be bright and innovative and have to fill the ranks of financial administrators, and manual workers.

Dream on Mr Young

If there was any evidence that any regeneration in which you have been involved actually came to fruition the taxpayer might believe you but the incompetence shown in most regeneration projects for which you have been responsible leads me to think that any university plan would be best handled by someone else.

Any political colour providing they know what they are doing.

The blame for not having a university in Swindon lies entirely with the government and not with the local council. It's just another example of the lack of funding from a government that has no interest in the welfare of the town as demonstrated time and time again by our useless and soon to be ex Labour MP's.
Let's hope, with a new government and when this country is out of recession, then a university campus in Swindon will be firmly back on the drawing board.

Can somebody please tell me why we need a university and what benefits it will bring?

Having been to university myself all I can see that it brings are thousands of students looking for cheap accomodation, cheap booze and cheap food.

Universities & Cathedrals always went together how come Swindon thinks they have either or are entitled to either.
Schools used to be schools and it was a privilege/individual
ity/and something was meant when you said you went to college.
All schools are mostly colleges and this means nothing as most of the qualifications these days are not worth the paper they are written on.
Thank you to those who have brought our once great education system to it's knees.

Who cares? There are plenty of universities for people to go to already if they want to. Too many in fact as most of the Mickey Mouse degrees they dole out are a waste of paper (although thinking about it, it would tie in nicely with our Disney twinning... hmmmm..)
.
Our councillors would be better employed focussing on bringing our outdated town and its infrastructure up to a reasonable standard and attracting some decent employers rather than this pie-in-the-sky.
