Singer has sights set on Glasto gig

A SWINDON-born singer/songwriter is hoping to get public support to vote for him so that he can play at the Glastonbury Rock Festival later this summer.

Matthew Kilford is hoping to play at the famous festival in June, rubbing shoulders with some of the biggest names in music and performing at one of the biggest outdoor music fesitvals in the calendar.

The singer entered the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition and he has been chosen as one of ten artists, from a starting list of 1,600, who are competing for the last place to play on one of the main stages.

That final spot will be decided by an on-line vote and Matthew is appealing to Swindon music fans to vote for him.

The musician lives in Great Coxwell near Faringdon but grew up in Haydon Wick and he has played in bands such as Belarus and Spacehopper.

His four-track EP House On The Hill received airplay on BBC Radio 6 Tom Robinson’s show and Mojo Radio. He has also supported such names as Seth Lakeman, Andy Yorke, Dawn Kinnard and Colin Blunstone.

‘’I am interested in his songwriting, Colin has an amazing voice,” said Matthew.

“At the Seth gig I sold more than 100 CDs.”

The musician was also chosen to play at the Radio One Big Weekend Official Fringe Festival in Swindon last year.

Matthew follows in the footsteps of his dad, Barry, who played in a band in the 1960s.

‘’My dad played guitar and his group played in McIlroy’s ballroom supporting The Rolling Stones when they came to Swindon.”

Matthew was invited to contribute a cover song for a compilation album called Sacred Songs For Worrying Times, which included artists such as Noah And The Whale and Richard Hawley.

‘’I played a Hank Williams tune, Calling You, and that was played on various BBC networks too,” he added. The singer is bringing out his debut 12-track album this autumn entitled Funeral Circus and in May he will be playing at the Camden Crawl in London for the second year running.

‘’It’s good fun and in Swindon I am booked for one of the Old Town Bowl series of concerts,” he said.

Since the Emerging Talent Competition started in 2004, more than 200 entrants have played at Glastonbury Festival. Winners and finalists from previous years include The Subways, Scouting for Girls, Golden Silvers, The Travelling Band, Moya and The Bellagios. Everyone who votes will go into a draw to win tickets to this year’s festival but there are only two weeks left to vote for Matthew.

I've voted! Matt Kilford has a fantastic soft voice full of soul. It will be a fantastic achievement for the Swindon music scene if Matt is successful in this competition! Good luck!!

So he has 3 votes so far (including his mum and dad) LOL.

Matt is a brilliant act, both on record, but especially live and is just the sort of act that would do well at Glastonbury. Even if you are not familiar with his work (shame on you) why not vote and help a local artist make that next step up the musical ladder.

Because if he did make it big, he would distance himself from Swindon as far as possible, that’s why!

Mr big is a clever man and his post regarding matthew distancing himself from Swindon is irony at it's best.

Better to listen here i think.

Oh the irony of valjester, telling someone to ‘Do One’ is suited to the playground where you are obviously from. I’m entitled to my opinion weather you like it or not.

you are, but an opinion should be based on some sort of fact or experience. Your posts are either at best wild supposition and at worst ill informed. Have you even listened to any of the acts in this competition?

Everyone's entitled to their opinion, but it's a shame when people belittle others without an (obvious) good reason (jealousy, perhaps)!? Swindon isn't renowned for it's culture, and doesn't have a history of breeding great artists, but nonetheless - Matthew Kilford is a quality act and Swindon could do a lot worse than to get behind him! Come on people - VOTE KILFORD!

Yes, I can read - The link in the original article allows you to click on ALL TEN of the artists profiles, where you can listen to 2 of their tracks. Just in case you missed the original link - here it is again: http://www.qthemusic

I’m not claiming to be a great speller Russ but thanks for pointing out my typo.

Think you will find its ‘Good luck’, not Goodluck. Additionally mr should be spelt Mr (capital M), matt with a capital M as it is a name and i should be I. Spelling and punctuation not really your strong point either is it really……

You got a repsonse to the question.

Mr_Big says...
4:16pm Mon 1 Mar 10

What does repsonse mean?

zoso says...
4:18pm Mon 1 Mar 10

Whilst Mr Kilford's songs are reasonably pretty, they lack the crucial hooks which separate an average singer/songwriter, from a potential star.

He will need far stronger songs if he wants to stand out from the thousands of other unsigned acts who will likely never amount to anything.

Tom Baxter or Damien Rice he is not!

I think Matt is one of the most talented musicians to have come out of Swindon in years, It'd be great to see him play Glastonbury this year and reach the wider audience he so richly deserves. I think the likes of "Know By Now" and "Zurich" are good enough to stand out from the crowd.

Minor spelling and grammar mistakes make no difference to me.It's the meaning i'm more interested in.I'm still waiting to read anything of worth from your good self.Asking if people can read when missing the answer yourself makes you look a complete t1t.

Maybe, but we have produced some good ones..

Justin Hayward
Rick Davies
Colin Moulding
Jack Dangers
Terry Chambers
Graham Whettam
Dave Gregory
Andy Partridge (so what if he was born in Malta!)

As for culture, you clearly haven't been to the Beehive, as featured on the Culture Show... quite a lot... probably.

Good luck Matthew!

Hey 'Casual', I've re-read my original post and I hastily posted it without explaining that I'm actually a fan of Swindon's culture and heritage. I just think it gets bad press nationally. I can see how my post couldeasily be mis-interpreted though, so I hope I can redeem myself by agreeing with your reply :o)

PS - I see this story is attracting interest on the 'most read' and 'most commented', so hopefully will raise Mr Kilford's profile and encourage people to vote!

lazarus says...

the irony is that the likes of Mr Big posting negative comments is still helping to raise the profile by making the thread more visible.

OK I havent heard his music, but good luck to him. BUT the guy lives in Faringdon, OXFORSHIRE!!! if/when he makes it they will introduce him as from Faringdon not Swindon!!

Good luck but please get the Oxford Mail to cover you. There are numberous bands IN Swindon that need our support, Costellos, Sleeping With Giants etc etc.

Damien says...
2:53pm Tue 2 Mar 10

Matt does indeed live in Oxfordshire, but only moved there fairly recently. He was living in Old Town when I bought my keyboard from him, and he plays all the regular Swindon pubs and clubs; The Vic, The 12Bar, Riffs, The Rolleston, The Beehive etc. So he's doing his bit for the Swindon Music Scene. It'll be nice if the people of Swindon can get behind him. And, rest assured, if he gets to play Glastonbury, I'm sure he'll big up Swindon!

swindonandproud says...
5:05pm Tue 2 Mar 10

Well lets hope he does big up Siwndon if he is wanting our support but the article states 'The musician lives in Great Coxwell near Faringdon' this to me puts me off backing him as I like many other swindonians despise anything that our oxfordshire cousins are looking for support for. As they do us.
That said Belarus were brilliant so good luck to him. I might look out for him at the Vic and make my mind up on his music rather than his postcode!!!

Damien says...
7:48am Wed 3 Mar 10

Good stuff - Hopefully more will make their mind up based on his music.

Just for the record though, Great Coxwell has an SN Postcode! ;o)

Although I admit to liking this bloke's music the fact he calls himself "Matthew Kilford" means I can't vote for him.

I knew someone called Matthew, who one day smashed up my car, by driving it into smouldering solidifying red hot lava.

So imagine my anger should he be introduced to the Glasto crowd as "Matthew Kil-ford", oh that'd make me sick.

So for that reason I'll vote for the volcanoes!

Matthew is very talented, and I'm glad that people are backing him in this competition. It's the kind of opportunity that he really deserves.

'Mr Big' is clearly very bored, and un-insightful, shame on you, bored man of Swindon.
