£1.5m refit for town centre store

Swindon town centre was given another massive vote of confidence this week with the announcement that Debenhams is about to get a £1.5m refit.

The department store on The Parade and Fleming Way is one of just three chosen by the UK office for a major facelift and expansion with the introduction of major new upmarket brands and concessions.

The refit, which begins on March 15, and is scheduled to last around 16 weeks, will see the first floor devoted entirely to women’s fashion, greater floorspace throughout, more than £300,000 spent on an extended cosmetics hall and the opening up of the escalator housing into an atrium to give a bird’s eye view of all the floors on the way up and down.

Debenhams manager Julie Brand said she and her staff are elated that the Swindon town centre store has been selected for the overhaul.

“This is a huge boost for us and for Swindon,” said Julie.

“Only three stores in the entire country have been chosen for a major refit – us, Glasgow and Manchester.

“The exterior of the store will look really attractive. We’ve got a brand new fascia onto The Parade and we’re re-opening the Fleming Way entrance and putting new vinyls along Fleming Way to brighten that side up as well.

“Inside, we’re introducing new brands including Dune, Fuse, Coast and Henry Holland, as well as a Classics World shop that will feature favourites like Eastex. The second floor will have lingerie, including Ted Baker lingerie, and children’s wear, sportswear and our Home department. The whole store will be more open and easier to navigate, and the view from the escalator will be phenomenal. This really will be like having a brand new store in Swindon.”

Parade manager Brian Morris said the refurbishment is another plus for shoppers in the town centre.

“The BhS redevelopment work is already underway, and this new-look Debenhams will make shopping in The Parade an even better experience,” said Brian.

Simon Jackson, CEO of town centre management company inSwindon, also welcomed the news.

“After the recent retail figures showed that Swindon’s level of empty shops is below the national average, this investment is yet another indication that there is confidence that Swindon is a place with a healthy economic future and demand for quality and value,” said Simon.

Debenhams said that there will be very little disruption to the sales floors because most of the work undertaken by the nominated contractor Wedderburn will take place overnight.

Debenhams will also be extending their Service World, which includes a click and collect service, Gold Card lounge, an alteration service and a wedding gift service.

Debenhams have linked up with Thomas Cook and Sandals, so that friends and family can choose a contribution to the happy couple’s chosen honeymoon rather than a household gift if they prefer.

"most of the work undertaken by the nominated contractor Wedderburn will take place overnight"
maybe our council could look into this option when planning road works and refuse collections!!!!!
Maybe the council doesnt need to bother about it because we are only taxpayers and voters, not customers.

I glad they're doing work on the outside of Debenhams in fleming way, it looks ugly.

So, in reality, the Debenhams building is old and work has to be done on it - Debenhams use this for free publicity.
.
Doesn't change the fact that House of Fraser downgraded their Swindon store to outlet status because it doesn't make any money.
.
It also doesn't change the fact that around a third of town centre retail premises now stand empty or are closing down.

I hope that that we (the Council Tax Payers of Swindon) haven't offered them or given them any incentive to carry out these works and that this is nothing to do with the Degeneration Twins? If it costs then we should know about it?

Debenhams up market? Since When? Why pay their prices and car park charges and fight your way through the yobs and pound shop devotees when you
can buy real designer clothes cheaper at the Outlet Centre or TKMaxx? I have no idea why anyone would want to shop in Swindon town centre when you have cheaper and better and more convienient shops on the edge of town (or even the internet). The town centre degeneration seems to be well on track, no ownder everyone on the M4 drives straight by.

It is quite interesting we regular contributors on here 'condemn' the £ shop nature of Swindon and then question whether people can afford this type of shop.

I think any town centre has to have variety in what is on offer by price and quality. That is the mix that SBC should be aiming for.

@Bobfm: agreed, it is good to see something other than pastie shops, pound shops and phone shops in Swindon town centre, but one has to look at the downgrading of House of Fraser to see the fate that awaits Debenhams - although I would agree that Debenhams is already lower market than a proper House of Fraser.

Well said Bob. I don't condemn the pound shops however. Better that someone is trading than another empty shop.

What I object to are the inordinate amount of phone shops with their collection of spikey-haired smoking salespeople loitering around outside. Some of them even have the temerity to stop you, flick the butt onto the pavement and ask if you "are with BT". Nice.

This news is a mixed bag in my opinion.

On the plus side, if they decorate the monstrosity of a building then this is major win as we all hate that building - the worst in Swindon. However will they decorate all the way to the top (including the upper floors which are not owned by Debenhams) or will they just do the first few floors? I expect the latter as Debenhams themselves do not own the building.

It's also good news to see any money spent on refurbishment.

HOWEVER

on the negative, its not as good news as it sounds. Remember, Debenhams were going to build a brand new store in Swindon. They actually signed up to do it. So the fact we have been chosen as one of only 3 in the country is not a surprise as the money was already ear-marked for us.

The downside of this is that it means any chance of a shiny new store as originally promised as part of Modus, has now gone. Instead we get a refurbishment, which is no way near as good.

I was hoping that they might build the new store as part of Union Square or a revised Granville Street plan.

Oh well at least it's better than nothing I guess!

I agree with Bob. Of course this is a positive, and of course we may not have enough shoppers to afford the Debenham's price.

But one thing is for sure, if no development happened then the whingers would be delighted. As it is they have to find some negative from a positive story when all of the country is suffering, not just Swindon.
