TWO sporting legends will be in Swindon talking all things football.

Tottenham Hotspur icons Pat Jennings and Martin Chivers are set to appear at the De Vere Hotel in Shaw Ridge.

Swindon Spurs supporters club has arranged for the event to go ahead on Friday, April 30.

Former Northern Ireland goalkeeper Jennings, who also played for North London rivals Arsenal, and Tottenham’s 1968 record £125,000 signing Chivers will be interviewed on stage by branch chairman Roman Piotrowski.

Together the pair won two League Cups in 1971 and 1973 with Spurs and the UEFA Cup against Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1972.

Covingham resident Roman thinks the evening will be another great event – the fourth of its kind after Micky Hazard, Keith Burkinshaw, Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa came to the town.

Last night Roman said: “It will be great to chat to Jennings and find out if his heart is Arsenal red or lilywhite Spurs.

“Chivers is a former record signing by manager Bill Nicholson. Both are absolute legends of the game at Spurs,” he said.

“Every time they come back onto the pitch at White Hart Lane 36,000 fans stand up and cheer.

“It’s great to get them here and I’m sure many interesting stories will come out of the night.”

Jennings, 64, played 673 games in all competitions for Spurs from 1964 to 1977. He later played for the Gunners, making 327 appearances in an eight year stint. He played 119 games for Northern Ireland.

He also won the FA Cup with Tottenham in 1967.

Amazingly 6ft tall Jennings scored for Spurs from his own area in the 1967 Charity Shield. His huge punt down field bounced over Manchester United goalkeeper Alex Stepney.

Chivers scored 174 goals in 367 games for Spurs from 1968 to 1976. He became the number one goalscorer at Tottenham after the sale of Jimmy Greaves to West Ham United in 1970.

Chivers’ strike rate for England was better than a goal every two games after netting 13 times during 24 international caps. Chivers ended his 20 year playing career with Barnet in 1982.

Tickets for the Swindon event, which starts at 7pm, are £35, or £350 for a table of 10.
