£1m extra to repair roads

WILTSHIRE Council says an extra £1 million is to be pumped into repairing the county's roads which have been badly affected by the severe winter weather.

The council had already agreed to increase spending on the county’s roads by £650,000 in the budget for 2010/11 but has now allocated £1 million more.

Council leader Jane Scott said: “It has been really difficult to find this extra money but we believe roads are a priority, so I’m pleased that we have been able to release this funding.

“The weather over the last two winters has been unusually bad and has caused severe damage to our roads.”

Dick Tonge, cabinet member for highways, added: “With the improvements in the weather and this extra cash we can use our new equipment more effectively.

“The velocity repairer can fill and seal about 200 square metres of road defects each day as compared with the 18 square metres using conventional equipment. We intend to deploy a third unit which will significantly increase the repairs we can carry out.”

The council has been criticised over the number of potholes in Wiltshire’s roads.

Shame that our Swindon council cant follow this good example of a council listening and acting for the good of its citizens.

No more than one would expect from a council doing what it is paid to do.
Condition of roads in Swindon has been very poor for over two years, cold spell exacerbated the situation. Then SBC started on 'repairs'. Totally useless. Potholes reappeared within twenty four hours. More money literally down the drain.
Maybe a little less money on WiFi schemes, parties in the park and Jollies at the Wyvern and they could hire proffessionals to do the job properly.

I fear that Swindon will have to wait another year before the central Canal is installed !

You think the roads around here are bad, take a trip along some of Oxfordshire's roads and ours feel like snooker tables in comparison. Try the main road between Faringdon and Wantage to see what I mean - you have been warned!

I can believe that. My point in Swindon is that an effort has been made to repair the roads, god knows they are in an unuseable state, the issue is : Incompetant labour, substandard materials, horrendous cost and results that are worse than the original problem.
A competive business, in the real world, would be doomed to bankruptcy and a possible law suite.
Swindon Borough couincil,no sweat. The rate payer pays. End of.
