DISABLED Swindon Town fans are celebrating after a local firm built a plastic weatherproof shelter in the Don Rogers stand.

Olympic Roofing, based at the Chelworth Industrial Estate in Cricklade, completed the structure for free before Town’s game against Norwich last Saturday.

The firm came forward after an appeal in the Swindon Advertiser seeking a business willing to donate their services for a good cause.

The branded £2,500 shelter will now keep up to 30 fans dry from the elements on match days at the County Ground.

Last night Mike Fisher, the STFC disabled supporters’ group chairman, said: “It has already made a huge difference to so many fans.

“I know my wife Rose was getting dripped on as water would run off the Don Rogers stand when it rains, now there’s no problem.

“Some disabled fans have even told me it feels quite warm in there. We can’t thank Olympic Roofing enough.”

Previously the disabled group managed to secure sponsors Conlon – a Swindon groundworks company – which enabled them to provide cover for supporters near the Arkell’s stand.

Mark Isaacs, the operations manager for STFC, said: “It’s fantastic and was built within a few days.

“We wanted to get the balance right for the disabled fans and for those sitting behind them in the Don Rogers’ stand.”

Managing director Karl Lodge, from Olympic Roofing, said: “We were only too happy to help out after seeing the appeal in the Advertiser.

“This is the sort of thing we do by trade and we’ve previously done work at the County Ground.”

Jayne Timblin, 41, of Haydon Wick, said: “A lot of the disabled supporters, like me, really appreciate it.”

And Ken Slatter, from Chiseldon, said: “It will make a big difference and stop us getting wet.”

There are currently two disabled liaison stewards looking after home and away supporters.

The shelter could also mean more disabled fans will come and enjoy Robins’ games as the team dreams of promotion to the Championship.

Fifth placed Town play mid-table Hartlepool at Victoria Park at 3pm today.
