ELDENE Primary School youngsters won a road safety quiz earlier in the year and the group was rewarded with a trip to the Adver. Here the children explain about the quiz and give their thoughts on newspapers:

ELDENE Primary School participated in a Road Safety Quiz last March and competed against 30 other schools in Swindon. The school had been accepted into the competition in previous years. They had also tried different road safety topics such as cycling proficiency and pedestrian training, which helped towards the quiz.

The five pupils from Eldene school were Erhan Alman, Jordan Myers, Tendai Moyo and Amber Sadler. They all revised for the quiz each day during class "quiet reading" sessions. As time came closer to the quiz the team were more enthusiastic towards it.

When the quiz took place, the five were put into a team and chose a team name.

There were eight sections each focusing on a different subject.

There were many different types of questions: word searches, road signs (which were shown on a projector), spot the dangers and multiple choice.

By half-time Eldene's team were in a high position, which gave the team more confidence and determination.

At the end of the quiz the team were announced to be in the top three teams in the competition, and were awarded a trip to either the fire station, police station or the Swindon Advertiser.

The top three schools were Eldene Primary, who chose the Swindon Advertiser office, Lainesmead, who chose the police station, and Haydonleigh, who chose the fire station.

Eldene's team visited the Swindon Advertiser yesterday, where they had a fantastic time and learned about journalism.

The pupils were accompanied by Vivien Ouldridge and Margaret Holt, who were the hosts of the road safety quiz.

It was a brilliant day and we all had fun. We (the Eldene Team) wish to thank the staff of the Advertiser for giving us an interesting and informative day, and also everyone in the road safety team.

Our view

  • By Jordan Myers & Erhan Alman.

When we won a road safety competition we won a day out to the Swindon Advertiser. We were able to write our story and this is it.

These are our likes and dislikes about the Advertiser: It gives you important and less important information about local events and other things around the world (including the World Cup.) You are updated on sports, health and safety, dieting and keeping fit, jobs for offer, television programmes and much, much more Our dislikes are many sad stories and brutal murders as some children read the newspaper and it is not suitable for them.

Our other likes are how much support fans give for well-known events like the World Cup in Germany starting today.

There is an amazing atmosphere around the world and we are supporters of football as well Come on England!
