Snelgrove launches bid for re-election

ANNE Snelgrove, Labour’s candidate for the South Swindon seat, has launched her general election campaign with backing from both sides of the political spectrum.

Mrs Snelgrove has received support from former Conservative Mayor of Swindon, Councillor Steve Wakefield, as well as former Socialist Unity candidate for North Swindon, Andy Newman, who is also secretary of the Wiltshire and Swindon GMB Union.

Launching her campaign on Monday, Mrs Snelgrove said she was very pleased to receive backing from the two.

“I couldn’t ask for two better guys to help me launch it,” she said. “I am delighted that we are off to a flying start.

“The important thing for me is that Labour appears in Swindon as a coalition of Labour and the centre, and I am appealing to all sensible, moderate Conservatives and all those on the left to keep that going for the good of the town,” she added.

She said the Labour party would keep frontline services in health and education while also supporting businesses in Swindon to help bring the town out of the recession.

She also said the party would continue with its policies for young people such as creating new jobs, keeping young people in school or college and creating extra places for apprentices.

Coun Wakefield, who resigned from the Conservative party in January, said: “Anne asked me to come along today, not to endorse her in the traditional way, but in recognition of the fact that Anne as been a very good constituency MP for Swindon.”

The Toothill and Westlea councillor, who served as mayor in 2008/09, said she had particularly helped in his wards with issues like flooding in Moresby Close and Benwell Close.

“As my MP she has also helped my family with one or two issues they have had and I am grateful for that and I would say that she listened to small business people and to ordinary members of the public from my ward who have not been happy with the issue over wi-fi and other matters and because of that I’m happy to come along and say to people that yes, Anne Snelgrove has been a good constituency MP and very good for the people of Toothill and Westlea.”

Mr Newman, who stood for the Socialist Unity party for the North Swindon seat in the 2005 general election, said: “I am quite well-known as a left wing activist in the constituency and I have not always seen eye-to-eye with the Labour party.

“But the response of the Government to the recession opened up a really clear gap between two main political parties.”

He said he admired the ‘decisive action’ by Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling of bailing out the banks, introducing a car scrappage scheme and cutting VAT for making a real difference to working people.

“Anne has always been very good constituency MP and has done some fantastic case work,” he said.

“Everywhere I go people speak very highly of her so I am very happy to assist her.”

Nominations for the general election close on April 20.

Your days are numbered Snelgrove - start packing your desk away!

The problem is she doest represent the Labour party, she only represents the Snelgrove party. She is only interested in her self and what she can get out of being an MP. She and her "pals" have brought this country to the brink of distruction with their incompetance and stealing, why on earth would anyone in their right mind vote for her????

The security word is "lady-home" which is very apt as this is where wshe will be spending her time after May!

The biggest problem here is Labour cannot be trusted in anything they say.
This has given a false impression of parliament and will show in the turnout.
Voting should be compulsary and heavy penalties if people do not.

Shame there aren't any believable policies.

Still flooding the job market with EU residents.

Still making it impossible for teenagers to find jobs - all taken by or low pay eu "friends"

Still lying about the economy - their mess our problem!

Still having Christians arrested for teaching what the bible says about homosexuals.
Still got no idea of her own and must ask whips before voting.

“I couldn’t ask for two better guys to help me launch it” - the 'Chuckle Brothers' have more respect than those two. Don’t forget people - a large amount of immigrants/recently turned ‘British Citizens’ will be voting Labour so make sure you get down the polling booths to thwart these bought votes!

It is vital to get rid of Gordon and as this is one of the most important seats in the the country the only vote is tory. I'm a moderate and occasionly sensible tory and will be voting tory as will mrswoo.

Couldn't agree more with Peter, Mr Big and Mr Woo. It's imperative that we send a message to the ZaNu Labour mob that 13 years of lies, deceit and suppression of our sovereignty is enough!

I think snelly is a disgrace and a thief.

I and quite a few people I know are all resolved to vote for the BNP.

We dont all agree with there policies or much else.

BUT we all hate the scummy lot that are in or want to be.

He's a nice enough guy, but let's face it, Andy Newman is, politically, even less relevant than the oafs of the BNP.
.
The problem, other than Ms Snelgrove's abysmal record of voting in parliament, is that a vote for Snelgrove is a vote for Gordon Brown. She's Mr Brown's right-hand woman for crying out loud.
.
As Mr Brown himself so clearly told the nation (after he let the banks reward themselves for failure): "We must no longer reward failure".
.
That being the case, how can anyone seriously consider voting Labour a fourth time? Vote Lib Dem, vote Green, vote Tory... vote for anyone but Labour. These people have wreaked enough havoc on the nation, they must not be given another five years.

Just ask yourself s, what has NuLabour done for me. Mass immigration , robbed pension funds, sold all our gold cheap, illegal wars, working classes worse off, top 10% get richer, MPs thieving, it goes on. And turned Swindon into a concrete jungle.

Surely this drain on public funds should have realised how badly she has done her job and should be embarassed to continue to ask her wage pagers to carrying on paying her over inflated salary.

Oh well, at least we'll get the pleasure of voting her out.

In the Council elections folks lets have some of our failed leaders/former leaders and totally useless councillors that have been with us far too long Small--Blugh--and Bawden and any other leader/deputy from 1997 to date as they have done absolutely zero for Swindon--except give away millions. Give us some Lib Dems for a change--they talk sense.

I am sorry Anne but what exactly have you achieved for Swindon?
A better grant from Central Wesminster?
How about the University support?
how about the dead in the water Town centre regeneration.
Anne wouldn't it be fair to say that you have failed to protect Swindon from this recession, failed to get swindonians a better deal for their council and miserably failed to act together with the council for the good of the Town.
Anne why can't you just stand down and do the honorable thing?

Well it looks as though the Tories have turned out in force so let us have a bit of balance here please. Anne Snelgrove started off badly but of late has captured the mood of the people and has been very helpful to those of us who have approached her with personal issues. As for her Tory opponent what does he stand for exactly? if somebody knows will they please tell me, because all the literature tells me is how the Tories are wonderful. One word sums them up - wi-fi with all the promises of people power that Cameron can unjustifiably promise. Think before you vote, you could learn to regret your decision, and get more autocratic decisions from your Tory Council.

This is how Anne Snelgrove (who is speaking for you) has voted on key issues since 2001:

Voted against a transparent Parliament.
Voted for introducing a smoking ban.
Voted for introducing ID cards.
Voted for Labour's anti-terrorism laws.
Voted against an investigation into the Iraq war.
Voted for replacing Trident.

It says it all really.

Unfortunately, for Swindon, we already have a Tory council.
This council have spent OUR money on their own self interest, wi fi.
They have done zero, to protect anything of the towns heritage.
This Tory council has bullied street traders and small businesses, and had the audacity to blame other organisations, for their actions.
The Tory candidate for North Swindon, is already a Tory councillor.
He claims it's better to vote for him, because he is local, therefore better to represent the people of Swindon.
shame he hasn't listened to them as part of SBC.
Our Tory council does not need to have any more encouragement, to ignore us.
As someone has already stated, Anne started off very poorly, but has since been a bit more defensive of Swindon.
She has been the only one prepared to openly oppose the building of more property at Coate.
Having said that, I will be voting Lib Dem, purely on my experience of attending planning meetings. They have also been the only councillors willing to speak up for the locals, regarding protection of Swindon's heritage.

Anne Snelgrove ?? helped with personal issues ?? I beg to differ...she has done nothing to help me on the few (two) times I asked for help and then her offices blocked my e mail preventing further contact...she can go and take a jump as far as I am concerned and any further letters from her office dictating how good she is will end up where the rest went...in the bin !!!

I will certainly be voting BNP!
We have been portrayed as 'oafs' on here, but in actuality when a group of BNP members get together, we just look like anyone else, a cross section of people from working, and middle class , family backgrounds who are all too well aware of what the REAL agenda is of all the other parties, it is the LibLabConUKip etc who are destroying our culture deliberately for reasons too complex and to spell out here, but horrifying. This is why we in the BNP are maligned so much, because we are the only true opposition.
Yes Ms 'career politician' Snelgrove, we don't need you any more.
