Tomlinson secures Tory double for Swindon

Justin Tomlinson, the new MP for Swindon North. Justin Tomlinson, the new MP for Swindon North.

TORY candidate Justin Tomlinson stormed to victory in North Swindon with a massive 7,000 vote lead.

Visibly moved, he took to the podium to rapturous applause after securing more than 22,000 votes and delivered a polished speech.

He said: “I will do everything to be a highly visible, approachable, enthusiastic, positive local MP.

“As I have always promised my campaign has been 100 per cent positive.

“I want to say thank you to the people who have put their trust in me: I won't let you down.

“A piece of advice I would give to all the candidates is even the best take one defeat to get elected.

“I will do everything to be a highly visible, approachable, enthusiastic, positive local MP.

Newly-elected Conservative MP, Justin Tomlinson

“I promise to be a local champion for Swindon.”

Many put Justin's large majority partly down to the fact that Labour stalwart Michael Wills stood down at this year's election, having held the seat since 1997.

Victor Agarwal said: “Michael Wills has been an excellent MP for North Swindon and I hope Justin carries on that tradition.

“I only came in in January and I got nearly 16,000 votes, I thank them all.

“And like all good people, I'll be back.”

This now means that both Swindon seats have gone to he Tories for the first time in the town's history.

Since the town was split into two constituencies back in 1997, both members of parliament have always been Labour.

Swindon was seen as a crucial seat for the Conservatives and they have secured an impressive victory here.

Watching from afar and intown. I see more efforts and solutions being put in from the local government such as the councilors than the MPs. I congratulate Justin and hopes he continues his fine work in Parliament .

Local candidate beats parachuted in and slightly odd candiate.

How suprising.

Be fair The Real Librarian, Justin has always been a strong candidate and has worked very hard to get elected.
Even if Wills had stood, if one looks at the winning margin with an increased turnout the result would have been the same.

Let us hope Justin is a man of his word and fights for the voters right to decide over the EU.

Good work Mr Tomlinson, and some fine words too. Great to see such a huge majority, it's a good base to work from.

Congratulations Justin, a well deserved win. A local MP who campaigned well on local issues and canvassed for votes. How it should be done.

before you start talking nonsense, check the proportion of the popular vote that UKIP is taking locally and nationally!
check the libdems figures too.
What you should state is that the voting system designed for a 2 parties Parliament is now obsolete and preventing a large number of voices being heard and represented.
This has now become a political oppressive system supported and defended by the Tories for obvious reasons.

It's not a huge majority. ANd He only got 44% of the votes cast. In other words 66% did not want him as MP.

We need election reform.

That said, he is local. His team did canvass. And I wish him well.

But at the end of the day he's a Tory. And people seem to have forgotten what it's like to be governed by them (assuming they can form a government.) Or seem to be happy to ignore how useless our Tory council is.

British armed forces and historical military achievements are characterized by courage but when it comes to Politics britons behave like cowards.

First of all, congratulations to Mr. Tomlinson. He has unseated a despicable woman in Anne Snelgrove (who is involved in a fraud with Meg Munn - please Google), and I hope that he will be a good servant for the people of Swindon.

As for the comments about UKIP, let me remind the apparatchiks here that they are not a joke party. They are pro-Britain and are against us becoming devoured by the fascist EU.

They were the only party to totally oppose the Lisbon Treaty (which is illegal) and they want to save the UK tax payer an estimated £16.425 BILLION a year by leaving Europe. They also favour British manufacturing and want to restore the Great in Great Britain.

ZaNu Labour has failed, crashed and burnt!

Old Town says...

As has the joke UKIP party !!
.
Crashed and burned....
.
Even the Green party managed to get an MP into power !
.
Time to disband - the UK electorate showed last night that there is no place for such a "narrow" party.....

are you blind?
36%=300 conservative, 29%= 250+labour, 23%=55! libdems, 12% = 29 others
this is a clear message that our political landscape has changed,
Only the voting system do not acknowledge the fact that 6.5millions people have voted libdems.
what is wrong with the green party Old Town?
The narrowest minded party is now in power and you encapsulate it perfectly.

Hopefully he will. It's encouraging to see an MP who actually knows what's happening around him and doesn't just sit in his mansion polishing his gold, yes, we're looking at you Mr Wills.

Old Town says...
5:29pm Fri 7 May 10

No, not blind Politicrat - just stating FACTS.
.
I think you will find I was commenting on UKIP...
.
Yes thats right - the party who achieved absolutely NOTHING at all - not one MP !
.
The fact that the greens managed one MP and UKIP managed none just says it all - as I say, time to bisband the narrow minded UKIP party once and for all......
.
As for your ramblings about a narrow minded party being in power - have you been out for 24 hours or something ?
.
Last time I looked NO party was in power !
.
Wake up and smell the coffee.....

OT, unfortunately UKIP didn't have the BBC sponsoring the Greens, and more importantly Caroline Lucas.

Old Town says...
6:59pm Fri 7 May 10

ha ha ha - excellent !!
.
Bob - are you now suggesting it is the BBC's fault that UKIP managed no MP's, and the Green party managed one ?
.
My word man - talk about clutching at straws !!
.
You are the sort of blinkered person that will believe that until the day you die.....
.
Nothing to do with the fact that the voting people of the UK thought your policies were awful, your party lacked substance and most people fundamentally disagree with your outdated ideas then ?
.
Oh no - all the BBC's fault !!!!!

Mr Blackwell says...
8:08pm Fri 7 May 10

To be fair, Caroline Lucas is on Question Time almost as much as Farage. And, let's face it, Brighton is hardly a 'real' town these days. Why do you think the Green Party leader stood there?

Bobfm says...
8:47pm Fri 7 May 10

Old Town, try reading the Brighton Argus and see what the people of Brighton actually think.

Mr B loads of tree hugging, no real degree's students, according to local people. Not to mention the gay community who were looking for alternatives. But of course it's not PC to say that.

Your racist mob only got 3.1% of the vote, next in line was the bnp at 1.9% of the vote. Now given your policies overlapped by 90% if you got together you might be able to secure 5% of the vote. Now lets just get this in perspective that means you would still not be in fourth place. It means you are insignificant and a waste of space .... no a racist waste of space.

Never mind-we could be having another election in the autumn. I think that depends on who will give up their policies or sell their souls. Sure--they all know they will pay the price when election time comes again.

you are correct, another elction should be upon us in less than a year.
We have heard it all on here, the greens the gays the progressists should be sent to the crematorium according to the right wing mob of Swindon.
I am now praying we have PR before the next general election, this country needs to move on and evolve.
First past the post was supposed to offer strong governement I heard, well how come we have this situation then? could it be voters dont want this system anymore?

Bobfm says...
8:56am Sat 8 May 10

and what percentage of the vote did the Greens get?.

As for another election, it will almost certainly be some form of PR. Clegg will not agree a deal with Cameron for anything less. Brown will give Clegg that assurance.

Remember under PR UKIP was the second largest UK party in the EU's, with the same percentage of the vote in a National PR election UKIP would take 144 seats. So bring on electoral reform

itsamess says...
9:10am Sat 8 May 10

Sorry Bob--but you must admit UKIP did not get close to gaining any national seats--nor local seats--that does send a very clear message.

Bobfm says...
12:10pm Sat 8 May 10

I admit we didn't but in most areas on a National basis we double our share of the vote, as we did in Swindon.

I do not think anyone seriously believes that 36% of the vote gives a party the mandate to Govern. Neither does having an AV system which may raise the individual candidates share to over 50%.

Merely on this election turnout under PF we would have had 20 seats, the Greens just 6 and the BNP a couple.

So which ever way it's dressed up FPTP is not democratic in anyway, especially as every party in power has rigged the boundaries to suit them.

You tell me how Cirencester can possibly linked with Tewksbury as a constituency.

Bob you need to take yourself outside and give yourself a good talking to. Your ragbag mob took a hell of a beating. The greens did better than your mob at least they have a seat. You are insignificant, a waste of time and money. No one is interested in your far right racist agenda. I suggest you do the honourable thing and fall on your sword before you make yourself look anymore ridiculous.
