Three servicemen are gearing up to run Hadrian’s Wall, non-stop for charity.

Ozzy Hicks, Al Meadows and Dan Wilkinson aim to run 84-miles along the landmark for Swindon charity Calm.

The three, who are stationed at RAF Lyneham with 24/30 Squadron, begin the feat on July 23 and expect to burn around 20,000 calories in the course of the challenge.

“It will be a huge undertaking,” said Ozzy, 40.

“And because of the nature of our jobs it’s been difficult to train together – or train really at all – so this won’t be a walk in the park.

“To be honest though, I think our biggest concerns are wearing out our trainers and nipple chafe but we have to finish the course because so many people are dependant on us.”

The challengers chose Swindon charity Calm – the Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Movement – which funds caravan holidays for children being treated and supports families of sick children.

Ozzy said: “The idea of running for Help For Heroes was suggested initially but with injured soldiers increasingly in the public eye, thankfully that is a charity now getting a lot of support.

“We chose Calm because it doesn’t have a huge national following. What they do is simple but it makes a huge difference.”

Calm has two static caravans, one in Exmouth and the other in Tenby, which are replaced every three years so they remain in a good condition and pleasant to stay in.

Ozzy, Al, 42, and Dan, 34, are hoping to raise a minimum of £5,000 for the charity.

“We have raised £2,000 already and have a lot of pledges so we are really hoping people will get on board and support us,” said Ozzy.

“You hope you are never in a position to use Calm but if you were it would be donations like the ones we are hoping to get that would make their work possible.”

The team are hoping to finish within 20 to 30 hours and will be relying on energy bars and isotonic drinks to get them through when their energy begins to fade.

All the money raised will go to the charity so the men are also appealing to anyone who can donate energy drinks, food or kit to come forward and contact the Adver on 01793 501809.
