A 25-year-old woman died in an horrific collision with an articulated lorry on the M4 near Swindon yesterday.

Police are still trying to ascertain how the VW Golf driver, from Bristol, lost control of her car as she was driving between Junction 15 and 16, near Hodson Bridge, early yesterday morning.

The fatal crash happened at 6.43am when, for reasons yet to be established by police, the young driver lost control of her blue VW, the near-side of the car striking the rear offside of a yellow and white DAF goods vehicle.

The driver of the goods vehicle was not injured.

PC Alan Kyne said: “No other persons are involved but anyone who witnessed the collision who has not already made contact with the police or who saw any vehicle involved in the collision beforehand is asked to call the Serious Collision Investigation Team.”

All three lanes of the westbound carriageway of the M4 were closed for approximately four hours to allow officers to conduct a specialist investigation of the scene and drivers were asked to find alternative routes to avoid the scene.

Yesterday’s crash was the second fatality on north Wiltshire’s roads over the weekend.

On Saturday a motorcyclist lost her life after colliding with a car on the A4361 at Winterbourne Monkton near Avebury.

The incident happened at 7.14am as the biker, who was travelling towards Swindon, collided with a car travelling towards Avebury The motorcylist, who was riding a blue Yamaha Fazer, lost control of the bike, colliding with a maroon Vauxhall Astra driven by a 46-year-old Cricklade woman.

The 37-year-old rider, from Westbury, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Vauxhall driver sustained minor injuries and no-one else was involved.

Wiltshire Police closed the road was for approximately six hours with traffic diverted away from the scene while specialist investigators carried out their inquiries.
