SWINDON council is appealing for people to contact them if they see a pothole that has not been repaired.

Council bosses say they have repaired about 90 per cent of all the potholes in the town, but admit they still have work to do.

Two very cold winters have left many roads across the country in a terrible state.

And heavy rain recently has prevented some planned roadworks from taking place.

Coun Keith Williams, cabinet member for streetscene, which includes roads, admitted: “There is an awful lot that has been done, but we have slightly slipped behind. This year there have been 7,600 potholes in Swindon that have been filled in.

“After the last two winters the serious situation on our roads has been a real challenge to deal with but we are making headway.”

He said his annual budget was £2.25m of which £204k had been set aside to totally resurface particularly badly affected roads, including ones in Highworth.

About £50k had been spent on repairing potholes alone, he added.

“We hope that by the end of next month we will have addressed the outstanding potholes still left from the winter,” he said.

“We have had a few downpours recently and when you get sudden flash flooding rain like that you wash out the foundations and further damage the road.”

He added: “If a member of the public sees a pothole we are keen for them to call them in to us.

“Don’t assume someone else has reported it already.”

Labour councillors in the Parks area have started a petition to get roads in their ward fixed, saying the town was becoming known as ‘pothole city’ Coun Mark Dempsey said: “Roads in Parks have been particularly affected including Kingswood Avenue, Whitbourne Avenue and Cranmore Avenue.

“On Kingswood Avenue, there are 20 potholes in 20 metres of road.

“Our residents are suffering with untold damage to people’s vehicles. “Many of the roads in Parks are so bad that they really need to be completely resurfaced.”
