Pets collar the limelight at show

10:35am Monday 17th July 2006

SWINDON'S passion for pets shone through as hundreds turned out for the RSPCA's family fun day and dog show.

The event, which was held at the Polo Ground on Marlborough Road yesterday, included everything from farm animals to fun fairs.

Claire Broadhurst, a committee member for the North Wilts RSPCA said: "It was a brilliant day.

"We had pet photography, a dog ability course, raffle, barbecue and loads of competitions."

In spite of all the fun and games for the families and their pampered pets, there was a serious side to all the fundraising.

"A lot of what we are doing today is to raise money to help look after strays and the treatment for animals that have been taken in," said Claire.

Volunteers for the veterinary charity PDSA were also on hand to talk to animal lovers and to sign up more volunteers.

Claire Wilson, a PDSA charity fundraiser for the Swindon Branch was delighted with the turn out.

She said: "It was a really good day. People in Swindon are definitely very caring about their pets, which is lovely to see.

"All of the money we raise will help people who can't afford to pay for their pets to receive medical treatment to ensure their animals receive the best care."
