FARMER Robert Hitchcock has thanked firefighters who spent four hours tackling a blaze at his farm yesterday.
Fire crews from all over Wiltshire attended the blaze involving bales of hay in a field at Hillocks Farm, in Tockenham, near Lyneham, shortly after midday.
Appliances from Westlea, Swindon, Chippenham and Calne, as well as a water carrier from Ramsbury and a control unit from Stratton, used hose reel jets and beaters to tackle the fire.
Mr Hitchcock said: “They spent about four hours at the farm so I’d like to thank them, they did a good job. I haven’t seen a fire like this for many years and I have been farming all my life.
“I’m not sure how much money I have lost, but we lost quite a lot of straw and the balers were damaged.
“We were out bailing straw and something must have over-heated and set the field on fire.”
