Another lorry hits bridge

PORRIDGE lovers will have missed out this morning after a lorry driver spilt their breakfast on to Wootton Bassett Road.

The driver of a 44-ton curtain-sided lorry, which was carrying hundreds of boxes of Ready Brek, was caught out by the low railway bridge at 7.25am yesterday.

The accident caused lengthy tailbacks along Wootton Bassett Road, Great Western Way and Tewkesbury Way.

Police cordoned off the area and Network Rail inspected the bridge for damage. The lorry was removed by noon.

PC Vince Prince, of the Swindon northern road policing unit, said: “Officers from Swindon attended straight away and Network Rail checked the bridge and found no damage.

“It was only a curtain-sided body but if it had been a box body the damage would have been a lot worse.”

Commuter Claire Orutley, 31, said: “It’s a bit of a mess. I’m just glad no one was hurt.”

Gary Stratton, 54, who was passing by, said: “I feel a bit sorry for the driver – it could happen to anyone.”

The driver received a £60 fine and three points on his licence for contravening a height restriction.

Before yesterday’s incident, the bridge, which has a height clearance of 4.5m, already bore the scars of previous clashes with heavy goods vehicles.

Last month an Interlink Express lorry lost a bit off its top after colliding with it.

Don't cry over spilt porridge! At least those late night revellers that go out in town and walk back home to West Swindon in the early hours can pick up their breakfast on the way home!

they'd just best check its porridge and not the contents of someone's late night dodgy kebab van fare!

Shame the milk float wasn't following on behind.
Don't lorry drivers know the height of their vehicles and whether or not they're going to fit under bridges?

3 points? What a disgrace - lorry drivers are a menace. This one could do with being fired.

In what respect was the lorry driver 'caught out' by the bridge?

Was he caught out by the clear height restriction signs, or was he caught out by the very obvious luminous yellow chevrons on the bridge?

The transfer of goods to the cut-price road haulage industry has a price. If a train driver passes a red signal, or a pilot goes off the end of a runway would they be 'caught out' as well - or guilty of a gross error of judgement?

Given the inconvenience and cost that this sort of ignorant driving places on those who are responsible for the bridges and the many other travellers, be they on the road or the railway, I find a £60 fine and three points laughable - hardly a deterrent to the next ignorant individual who may cause sufficient damage to the bridge to bring a train off the rails...

So in a rather roundabout way you agree with my above statement that the silly s0d should be fired?
