“WHAT is the position when a person goes to the fishmonger and pays 2s 2d for haddock, and later finds she is sold conger eel?”

When this question was raised by Coun Mrs EM Simpkins at a meeting of the Swindon Food Control Committee she was not amused by the outburst of laughter.

She told members it was not joke but a case of gross profiteering.

The fishmonger had told his customer that there was no law which could prosecute him for selling conger eel as haddock.

However, the committee found that his actions might amount to misrepresentation under the Sale Of Food Act, in which case the Public Health Committee had jurisdiction.
