TRIBUTE was paid to the late mayor at a church service to celebrate the inauguration of the new one, Alderman F E Allen.

The Rev Joseph Coombs, the minister of the Wesley Church, in Faringdon Road, recalled the great humanity the late Henry Russell Hustings always showed those with whom he dealt.

“There’s one thing about him,” he quoted a colleague from the Home Guard.

“Mayor or no Mayor, you can go to him with a problem and he will meet you like a man.”

These sentiments were expressed by the Rev Coombs during an address based on a Bible passage taken from Isaiah Chapter 26 given on the occasion of “Mayor’s Sunday.”

A procession from the town hall included representatives from the Special Constables, the St John Ambulance Brigade, the British Red Cross and the AFS and ARP services, led by the Home Guard and accompanied by Swindon Town Military Band.

The Mayor followed with Swindon’s MP, Mr W W Wakefield, and various other local dignitaries, along with some representatives from the town’s numerous societies and committees.

“After the service the procession returned to the town hall, where the mayor expressed thanks to all who had accompanied him,” reported the Advertiser.
