WORK experience for many young people is often spent stuck in an office – but Gemma Mowatt could find herself at a football ground helping to produce a package for TV.

The 16-year-old is one of only five teenagers shortlisted in a national competition to spend a day with top TV producer Billy McGinty.

It is all part of energy firm npower’s What’s Your Goal Initiative, which aims to help teenagers kick off a career by allowing them to muck in with professionals in the football industry.

Gemma, a pupil at Wootton Bassett School, said: “It’s great to know that I’ve got this far in the npower competition and obviously I’m excited.

“I would be over the moon if I were picked to work with the TV producer for Sky.

“I hope that npower can see I have got what it takes to be successful in a TV career because I really would like to work in that sort of area.”

What’s Your Goal will give 11 teenagers the chance to spend a day with a professional mentor in one of several football roles.

One budding football pundit will sit alongside former England captain Kevin Keegan at a high profile Football League match and another will prove they have got the gift of the gab while managing a group of players with Neil Warnock at Queens Park Rangers.

Gemma, of Brinkworth, who hopes to pursue a career in television or film, has entered the TV producer section of the competition.

She had to submit a short written entry about herself, her skills and what it would mean if she was successful.

She also had to produce a three-minute video about why npower should choose her.

If Gemma wins, she and Billy McGinty will attend a Football League match at Fratton Park, the home of Portsmouth FC, to learn how a TV producer makes a live broadcast from a football game.

The pair will then go into the Sky Sports studios to create a TV segment.

“I think it would be a challenge but I have always liked a challenge and it’s a great opportunity for young people to get involved in some practical work experience,” said Gemma.

Judging for all sections of the competition took place on Thursday and the winners are due to be announced by Wednesday.

Kevin Keegan said: “What’s Your Goal is a one-of-a-kind programme that gives students a foot in the door to try their hand at incredible jobs they’ve never considered before, inspiring thousands of others to believe in their own capabilities and futures.

“We’re looking for an extra special set of skills, ones that students can’t always get across in school exams and tests.”
