ROYAL “weddings” have been taking place across the town as children prepare for tomorrow’s big day.

Brownies got to live out their princess fantasies last night as they all dressed up for a royal party at Bath Road Methodist Church, in Old Town.

The girls, aged between five and seven, sent a card to the royal couple ahead of the wedding and were given a big surprise when they were presented with a reply to their letter from a spokesman for Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Old Town Rainbows leader Veronica Clancy, 31, said: “The girls all made a large card for their wedding and sent it off to them. We didn’t expect a response because we thought they would be getting masses of cards from everyone.

I received a letter at the beginning of April and thought ‘no, it can’t be an invite to the wedding’ but was even happier when I saw it was a response to our card.

“They were so pleased when they received the response, there are a few of them who are excited about the wedding.

“The party is to celebrate the wedding and they have all dressed up as princesses and showing off tiaras they have made, they have all been very excited about this event.”

Staff and pupils at Gorse Hill Infants and Junior Schools made it a real royal occasion yesterday as they celebrated the wedding after a whole term of learning about the event.

The school put on a special assembly where children got to present what they had learnt before they all enjoyed a street party in the school car park.

Headteacher Sue Kershaw, who dressed up as the Queen, said: “Everybody got dressed up for the occasion as princesses and princes.

“It is one of the most memorable days of the decade and it is nice that they are going to understand what is going on.”

Wedding bells were also ringing out at Drove Primary School as a children marked the end of their work on princes and princesses. Reception class children have studied their favourite princess stories and myths, made wedding invitations and learned about the royal family tree.

Lorraine Jeffery, reception class teacher, said: “What it is all about is giving the children an understanding of what is going on.

“Putting this on has been a big group effort and the children have really enjoyed every bit of it. It has been a lot of fun and everyone got to dress up today but we have also managed to incorporate the national curriculum in what they have done.”
