COUNCILLOR Stan Pajak won’t be overdoing it with the royal wedding festivities today as he limbers up for the Neolithic Marathon on Sunday.

The Swindon Lib Dem leader, 54, is hoping to raise enough money through sponsorship to buy new furniture for the Queens Park Community Cafe.

The cafe, which is run by the community council which Stan chairs, has been a huge success since its recent reopening but is in need of new tables and chairs for customers.

“Hopefully we can raise about £500 to help the cafe which has been going really well – of course we have benefited from the lovely sunny weather over the bank holiday and the Royal Wedding which is coming up,” said Stan, of Drove Road.

“We have got lots going on and people will even be able to eat Prince William and Kate muffins, and obviously being named Queens Park it seems the most appropriate place to celebrate the big day on Friday.

“We are expecting lots of people during the summer months but of course, we need new tables and chairs.”

Coun Pajak, who has been running for the past 20 years, has taken part in every Swindon Half Marathon and even completed the London Marathon several years ago.

“I always get a bit worried before a big run,” he said.

“The London Marathon was amazing, the atmosphere was great, but this one is going to be slightly different because it is cross-country so it is going to be quite tough.

“I have been training about three or four times a week – I haven’t done as much as I wanted to, but then you rarely do.

“I’ve been running for many years now. I first got in to it when my daughter organised a fun run at Holy Rood school, and I have been running ever since.

“I am aiming for a time close to four hours, then I will be happy.”

The marathon, which is organised by the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust sees competitors run from Avebury to Stonehenge.

There are races and distances for all the family, with the option of a full or half marathon, a seven, 11, 15 or 26 mile walk and a brand new, 25 mile circular rough terrain bike route.
