The theme of this week has definitely been walking. Yesterday Leah and I joined a guided walk round Rodbourne in the company of Gordon and Ernie from the Rodbourne Community History Group. Founded in 2005 this group is committed to recording the history of the area and the thriving community that lives there.

Dominated by the GWR Works, Ernie gave us a poignant view of growing up in Rodbourne. History is so much more than a nostalgic look at the past and I won’t lessen the impact of his talk by mentioning it here. Book on to one of the walks and hear it for yourself first hand. Log on to their website on www.rodbournehistory.org for further details.

I’m still coming down after the hugely successful Friends of Radnor Street Cemetery’s open weekend during which we held a local history exhibition in the chapel with guided walks through the cemetery. Visitors were able to consult the map of the cemetery and find their ancestors graves and also ask for help with their family history research from the many experts on site.

A steady stream of people visited the exhibition across the two days and we put on an additional two unscheduled walks due to demand. Feedback from visitors was very encouraging and we now have a growing list of supporters.

Graham, Brian and Leah have been working hard, cropping and ordering photographs of the burial records in preparation for uploading them online. The website hosting these records will soon be going live providing a wonderful resource for family historians that has previously been difficult to access.

Meanwhile we’re busy researching a different route for our evening walks in June and July while plans are in preparation for another open weekend at the end of the summer. For more information check out our Friends of Radnor Street Cemetery facebook page and look out for the launch of our website.
