50 jobs put at risk by closure of depot

A COURIER firm is planning to close its depot in Swindon, putting 50 jobs at risk.

Parcel delivery giant Yodel announced to staff last week that it was looking to streamline its operations and was proposing to close 45 service centres across the country, resulting in redundancies.

One of those earmarked for closure is the company’s service centre, in Kelvin Road, Greenbridge.

The firm has said the move is being planned for early next year and is to enable the business to operate profitably while responding to the demands of its customers.

Employees are being consulted on an individual basis about the changes.

A spokesman for the firm said: “Yodel has announced details of the plans to complete the move to a single operating platform that will enable the company to operate profitably.

“This strategy is designed to meet customer-driven demand for faster, more flexible delivery options and higher standards of convenience.

“As part of these plans Yodel is proposing to close the Swindon service centre during quarter one of 2012. This will put approximately 50 employees at risk of redundancy.

“Yodel is working closely with colleagues across the business to ensure a smooth transition and to make sure that all of our colleagues are fully informed and presented with all the relevant options available to them.”

Jonathan Smith, chief executive of the company, said: “This is not a decision we have taken lightly. We have to make these changes to meet the needs of our customers and create a sustainable and profitable business model. We have been running two operational networks since early 2010 with limited flexibility and have now concluded the planning to move to one operation.”

Justin Tomlinson, MP for North Swindon, said he was disappointed to hear about the threatened closure.

“It’s extremely disappointing that we will be losing these 50 jobs due to relocation,” he said.

“But it is in stark contrast to the current situation which has seen Swindon weathering the challenging economic times robustly.

“Hopefully Swindon will be able to build on the recent record export levels and bounce back in retail sales.”

An MP who seems to think Swindon is weathering the economy--he must have ignored the unemployment figures--empty shops--trading estates
empty offices--all the signs of doing really well--i think not.

The constant drive to more distribution centralisation ultimately leading to drivers having to drive longer distances.
What is saved on back office and depot cost is paid for by higher fuel costs, increased traffic and greater pressure on drivers to hit delivery targets.

This is very sad news indeed for the workers involved and their families.
I agree with Tomlinson MP, the economy will eventually pick up again. However this is little comfort to those losing their employment.
Mr Tomlinson hopes this and that, which is very well and positive.
I really would like Mr Tomlinson to tell us about his plans to encourage people to retrain, gain new skills and most importantly I am very eager to hear what Mr Tomlinson is doing to bring investments in Swindon and how succesful he has been in securing Public Capital spending in Swindon.

In some ways Tomlinson is right. Things are much better in Swindon employement wise than in many other similar sized towns. But we had a lower starting point of unemplyment in the 1st place.

I'm sure that the employees made redundant will just return to Goa and Poland......

If you think we have got problems now with local unemployment wait until a well hidden deal on allowing companies to import cheap labour from India and elsewhere is ratified by the EU. It's called Mode 4 and all the main EU UK parties seem to have kept it quiet.

In effect it will allow corporations to bring in workers under visas that don't count against the so called reduction total Cameron keeps speaking of.

So in short more immigrant workers, who will be paid the minimum wage of the UK, but no national insurance or tax.

This it the Tories idea of protecting Britain with their so called red lines. Wonder what Justin has to say about this.

Strange how a communist paper has known about this for the 4 years the negotiations have been taking place as have all the major parties and of course ukip.
It covers investment companies who have used this system for years to get around our own legislation-much in the same way as idian nationals
very simply go to Goa and get Goan passports and claim EU citizenship.

Yodel have are acting badly. Firstly they encourage nearly all their employed drivers to become owner drivers. This helps to cut Yodels over heads and puts all the costs on to the drivers. They promised 6 month and 12 month contracts to these drivers. Then less than 3 months later, they announce they are going to close the depot anyway. Poor show Yodel, poor show.

To be fair JT is correct, Swindon is doing (relatively) well economically. I saw a stat last week showing that the Borough of Swindon is the fifth most productive place in England.
.
However, did JT think about speaking to local business leaders before voting yes last night? I'm sure Honda, Intel, NPower, etc. would have a view on Swindon's links with the EU...

I am very impressed that Mr Tomlinson MP has had the courage to vote in favour of an EU referendum, because it is always right to give citizens the chance to cast their vote.
If the SNP can have a referendum on Scottish Independance, then surely it is right for Britain to have a refendum on its relationship with the EU.
We do business with Europe, we do business with many other parts of the World too, I do not see why the UK should be governed from Brussels.
