Blankets plea for homeless as temperatures plummet

WITH temperatures poised to drop to minus six, Swindon’s homeless charity has launched an urgent appeal for blankets.

Threshold Housing Link has already had to turn people away from its hostel as it is full to capacity, so staff are in desperate need of blankets they can hand out to those who are unable to find somewhere warm to sleep overnight.

Operations director Phil Smith said: “With the weather dropping to below freezing – even to minus 6 this week – we are in desperate need of blankets to hand out to those people who have no home to go to or are sleeping in unsuitable accommodation.

“Each night people are having to suffer the cold – staff at Threshold need to be able to offer some sort of comfort and, by handing out blankets,Threshold will be helping homeless people to keep the cold at bay.”

On Wednesday night, hostel staff handed out five blankets and on average there are at least three callers each night who come to the hostel for warm clothing and blankets.

Currently, Thresholds Street Outreach Team believe there to be an average of 10 people sleeping rough in Swindon.

On Sunday night another homeless person called an ambulance to a vulnerable, wheelchair-bound homeless man who they found out on the street. He was taken to the Great Western Hospital for attention.

Phil said: “It’s a sad fact that due to the hostel being full in December there were 50 refusals at the hostel door and in January there have been 22.

“Threshold operates 10 resettlement hostels in the town for men and women aged 16 and above who need help to resettle into a home of their own.

“Please can the generous people of Swindon help Threshold to help those who are in dire need?”

People who have donations can drop off blankets, duvets, sleeping bags or even woolly hats, gloves and socks to staff at Threshold’s Direct Access facility, the Culvery Court Hostel in Harding Street, situated in the town centre, anytime between 8am and midnight each day.

The hostel is open to callers between 8am and midnight, every day and is open to the homeless for accommodation 24 hours a day, every day.

For more information call the hostel on 01793 538208.

Perhaps they should spend some of their benefits on warm clothing instead of strong cider?

What a very unsympathetic comment! God forbid you'll ever have the need for a blanket on a cold night, until then perhaps don't judge people you don't know. It's not necessarily of their own making. I regularly drop blankets/sleeping bags and warm clothes to Culvery Court and would encourage anyone else to do so, the staff are always very friendly and grateful.

Totally agree with mrwoo. You can buy a jumper far cheaper than 4 cans of special brew. They seem to have the money for their booze and drugs!!!!!

Most people who are sleeping rough in Swindon are doing so through their own actions. Housing is available and benefits are available to pay for this. I personally rent 2 houses to people in receipt of benefit, although I would not rent to anyone with drink or alcohol problems. The vast majority at some time or other have prioratised drink or drugs over hard work and security. You do not become an addict by accident and yes I have some very close hand knowledge of drug addiction. Even if homeless they will be in receipt of benefits which they could use to help themselves, but most choose not to.

WoodsideLady says...
3:45pm Fri 3 Feb 12

You're extremely lucky to be in a position to have 2 houses rented out so you'll never know how it feels to be cold, hungry and homeless. I have nothing further to say on the matter so we'll agree to disagree.

Amberflame says...
4:41pm Fri 3 Feb 12

I also agree with MrWoo but I have no problem giving to charities and would absolutely not want anyone to be sleeping rough regardless of their circumstances but in the vast majority of cases people find themselves on the streets because of drug or alcohol issues and as Mr Woo has pointed out they have made this choice. I am sorry WoodsideLady but your comment about being small minded and uncharitable is unfair! 'Charity' is very big business, and perhaps we should be asking why people in the borough are sleeping rough and why there not enough 'charity' accommodation?. I seem to be giving to charities all the time, they are everywhere and I would just like for once to go in to town or to the supermarket without being confronted by a charity representative. Sorry!

Amberflame says...

The article states that on average there are 10 people sleeping rough in Swindon. Are they sleeping rough by choice? Why are the various charities in Swindon not able to accommodate this small amount of people??

So does that. Sounds like you're judging someone you don't know, too. I also doubt that luck had anything to do with MrWoo's properties, unless he purchased them after a lottery win which is most unlikely. It's more probable that he's made his own life what it is today, as others do. It's also entirely possible that MrWoo 'regularly' gives to charity but just doesn't feel the need to tell everyone about it...

Interesting re the small number at just 10. I say that because Samaritans opted to reduce the number of beds in favour of more 'luxury'.

At the time comments were made that if with 150 beds (I think) they were usually full, what would happen with less.

It seems it did.

I hope any of the judgemental people that are sitting in their warm homes never have any circumstances that may make them homeless. If you had to sleep rough on the streets you'd probably want whatever it took - cans of tennants etc to numb the cold and misery of living rough... There by the grace of God Go I etc...

Probonopublico says...
7:24pm Fri 3 Feb 12

@Robfm As usual you are talking rubbish. I suppose you mean the Salvation Army hostel Davis House? They had no choice but to close: the place was going to be demolished. It wasn't fit for purpose anyway. They certainly didn't opt for more luxury. Shows you've never talked to a Salvationist if you think this. They are very dedicated people who at least understand the problems of addiction, unlike Two-Houses Woo.

Robfm says...
7:38pm Fri 3 Feb 12

Probonopublico I am aware they had no choice as to the move, they had a choice as to how they fitted out the new building which if memory serves correctly included en suit facilities, computers etc.

The full details were highlighted on here. I am not knocking the 'army' merely pointing out that they perhaps could have accommodated more, by providing less.

As Hmmmf implies/states drinking alcohol won't warm you up, but it will make you feel warmer. The reason is because alcohol causes your blood vessels to dilate, making blood rush to your skin. It also increases sweating. Though this will make you feel warm for a few minutes, it actually lowers your core body temperature (up to 6 degrees) and can even cause hypothermia in extreme cases.

Just another number says...
10:11am Sat 4 Feb 12

Another googled, copied, and pasted comment from a barman who, by his own admission, can't even tell when a punter is too drunk to be served and therefore considers himself above the law. Well done Robfm, you yet again redefine the possible depths to which hypocrisy can descend.

There's a fine line between ensuring someone gets help and enabling them to continue their self destructive behaviour. Giving someone benefits money so they can use it to buy alcohol and drugs clearly doesn't work. Perhaps giving vouchers that could be exchanged for food, clothing, and shelter would be a better answer. No system is perfect but at least that would go a bit further towards ensuring that the homeless are getting practical help rather than a means to continue a self destructive lifestyle.

itsamess says...
10:19am Sat 4 Feb 12

Alcohol actually thins the blood- thus taking alcohol quickly can cause a rush to the brain destabilising its function--commonly known as getting drunk.

The blood rushing to the skin as a result of vasodilation can become permanent over time, and it's why some alcoholics have that bulbous, veiny nose. Isn't it Robbo.

Peter Mallinson says...

I do not understand why this cold spell was not planned for by the charity. The collection of blankets should be done all year round and then stockpiled for the cold weather that we get every year.

At the Walcot Charity Shop we bought Snuggie blankets to give away well before the cold weather arrived, we finished giving them out last month.

It is essential to plan ahead so may I suggest that we can help if we start planning for next year now.

Someone points out that your life revolves around google snippets and you get all angry with them.
It's you that doesn't like the truth.
Then you make condescending remarks about others comments. Never seeing your own failings.

Robfm, are you proud to have googled up something that any school child would know, in response to a remark that was sarcastic rather than serious, which you then posted proudly as though no one could possibly understand until you enlightened them?

Thought so.

That pretty much describes your interactions here -- you have no self esteem what so ever so you trawl the Adver site looking for someone you think you can insult or abuse or undermine in some vain attempt to show you have some intrinsic value at their expense. That very habit proves that you have none and deserve it even less.

As for ruining your business, you've done that all yourself. I Too is no different than anyone who's told a friend not to buy a product because the manufacturer engages in unethical activity. I've looked around the other threads.
Couldn't see any crime being commited.

Only one thread has recently survived any lengthy duration recently.

It lasted several days without incident

Virtually everyone on it had differing opinions, but everyone debated them nicely.

There was no mud slinging, insults or goading of any form.

It wavered slightly off topic at times, but always stayed rellevant throughout.

That was the Oasis revamp thread

That was the thread where Robfm was absent.

I fail to see why the Adver continues to allow him to urinate on these threads.

Come on Adver. Sort it out
