Website puts Old Town hotspot on the map - of crime

A CRIME-MAPPING website has pinpointed a small area in Old Town as being the biggest trouble-spot in the south of Swindon.

The chart, which was updated this week by the Home Office, shows 56 incidents happened in and around Wood Street and Devizes Road in December. The biggest problems were anti-social behaviour, violent crime and criminal damage.

The area has had few incidents in daylight hours, when there’s a thriving mix of shops, bars and cafes, but has been a hotspot for drunken behaviour by night.

Coun Mike Bawden (Con, Old Town and Lawn) said: “Old Town has two faces.

“During the day it’s a quiet shopping area, but it changes its character quite dramatically in the evenings, particularly on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, when it turns into a late-night entertainment area, with all the associated problems.

“The borough’s licensing officers and the police and councillors have a continuous balancing act to try to contain the problems.”

Coun Bawden has attended regular meetings with the police to address the issues.

“It’s a problem we have had for many years which the licensing authority, police officers and ourselves have worked very hard on,” he said.

“I am hoping legislation which has been passed by Parliament and comes into force this year will provide greater powers to the borough and police to deal with the problem.”

Traders in the area – which has enjoyed a rise in visitors – expressed surprised.

Matt Lewis, owner of Gusto cafe-bar in Albert Street, said: “We open to 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays and most of the customers say they would rather come here than the town centre because there is less trouble.

“It might be that more crimes are reported in this part of town as there is a sense of community and more interaction with the police.”

Lionel Brasier-Dinning, co-owner of Old Town Cafe, in Devizes Road, said: “We haven’t had any issues since the windows and doors were kicked in about five years ago.

“The area is quite well patrolled during the day and there is a good relationship between traders and the police.”

Tim North, community beat manager for Lawn and Old Town neighbourhood policing team, said: “It’s still a generally safe environment to enjoy, provided people take sensible precautions. Many of the crimes committed are obviously as a result of the amount of alcohol that is consumed.

“The latest figures we have had for Christmas were down on last year, so that’s pleasing, but we are not complacent.

“The footfall through Old Town has increased considerably and where there are more people, there is more opportunity. It is also easier than ever to report crime, as nearly everyone has a mobile.

“Where shoplifting is concerned we are working with traders and encouraging them to report crimes.”

How sensible, then, of Swindon Borough Council to allow a bail hostel at 23 Croft Road, Old Town and a similar type hostel on Bath Road, Old Town.

Slow hand clap all round.

You get more drunks where all the bars are? Quelle surprise!

I'm going to do a survey to find out if there are more people found wearing swimming trunks between North Star and Hawksworth.

It's laughable, isn't it? The faux-naivety of the authorities would be funny if it wasn't so pitiful.

75% of all crime is committed by people who are drunk. That statistic has been know, verified and established by the authorities themselves. It's not changed in decades.

Still, at least they now seem to have a police CCTV can parked in Wood Street every Friday and Saturday night. Although, as the police know full well, the problem with drunken crime is that those committing it don't care if they're being watched or get caught, that's kind of the problem and kind of why they're doing it in the first place.

As others have said in various threads, it's illegal for any pub or bar to serve alcohol to customers who are clearly drunk... and yet every single pub and bar in Old Town does exactly that every single week.

I am suprised that Old Town is worse than the Fleet Street area.

Old Town is rowdy, but I have never witnessed any trouble there. In contrast, the atmosphere in Fleet Street is very hostile.

@MrAngry: the Old Town figures are skewed by the 'criminal damage' stats. You are right that the levels of aggression and actual violence are far higher in the town centre area.

I disturbed 5 youths at 5pm yesterday.
On playing back cctv it showed them smashing up a breeze block and urinating on a neighbours car on private property.

Just before I disturbed them it looked like they were going to all smash the car up.

Approx 7pm, as I was showing the neghbour the cctv footage 3 of them came back and then loitered around the corner.

We called the police, but intercepted the thugs before the police arrived. Just to give them a little warning.

The police didn't visit to see the cctv footage?

Today at 2pm another two of them returned (smahing up the same blocks) I walked round the block to surprise them. One ran away (bit pointless as I used to be Swindon Cross country champion etc)

The other one started crying and begging for mercy. Said he was only there to smoke weed and he'll never return.

The only one from the original 5 that we hadn't "had a word with" wearing a distinctive red cap decided to hang around on the next corner with a couple of others.

By this time my neighbour had returned home, so we went for a little walk.

We now have 3 households on mobile phone standby.

Not sure if they are all lads (and 1 girl) from a hostel in the town centre area, or a bunch of pikeys who have decided to strike our area, but justice will prevail

They are all so stupid that they return in daylight, wearing distinct twotone blue jackets that could even be distinguished on black & white uv cameras.

I imagine they are the same group targetting Old Town

Mancunian Way ... sorry to hear that.

A mate of mine was punched in the face by a gang of youths last year while walking home after a night out. He was on his own and a gang of about 6 lads walked up and punched him for no reason.

Even if the police catch them, the courts will just give them a slap on the wrist.
