Mum and son left in the cold as big freeze sets in

Kelly Mears with son Kyle try to stay warm after their boiler broke down Kelly Mears with son Kyle try to stay warm after their boiler broke down

SWINDON will feel the bite this weekend, with temperatures set to plummet to -10C.

The Met Office has issued a Level Three alert for the town, meaning severe cold weather, icy conditions and Snow can be expected up until Tuesday.

Snow is expected to be confined mainly to higher ground and milder conditions are expected from this evening.

But for one young family, keeping the cold at bay is going to be more problematic than normal.

Kelly Mears and her four-year-old son Kyle, of Pewsham Road, Penhill, will be without central heating until next Friday after the boiler in their council-owned property broke down on Wednesday.

Single mum Kelly said: “The council came out to me on Thursday, but they can’t fix it with the chemicals they need until Friday and it is supposed to snow at the weekend.

“It is absolutely freezing – my son has got severe asthma and he came downstairs yesterday morning in his pyjamas, dressing gown and a blanket and his lips had turned blue.

“The council have given us some temporary heaters and I have got them on full blast all day and night, but it is going to cost a fortune to run. I have been given a cheque for £76.42 by the council but that won’t cover the cost to have them on.

“We have to stay here because we haven’t got anywhere else to go. It is a nightmare.”

A Swindon Council spokesman said: “We have arranged for our contractors to visit Ms Mears’ home on Monday to resolve her boiler problems and have given her four electric heaters in the meantime.”

While Kelly battles with a broken boiler and freezing temperatures, Charlie Reynolds, 64, will be keeping warm in his newsagent cabin, in Stratton, with five layers of clothing and an old bicycle inner tube as exercise equipment.

Charlie, who remembers doing paper rounds back in the 1960s for the family business, said: “We used to go out in all weathers.

“I remember in the winter of 1962 or 1963, and the roads were like sheets of ice because no salt was used then, and I fell off my bike and slid along on my paper bag.

“I just wear lots of layers to work so I don’t feel the cold. I’ve got a little heater in with me, but I don’t bother turning it on. I am fine.

“If I get cold, I use my bicycle inner tube for exercise.”

Charlie has inherited his attitude from his father, Charlie snr, who is still working at the grand age of 96.

Charlie said: “The weather never puts him off either, he will ride his bike up to the shop in the snow.”

what chemicals is it that you need SBC, any of the chemicals you could need are surley in the local plumbers merchants? plumbase/PTS/swindon plumbing supplies/ would it not be cheaper for the council to go get some rather than having to pay this young lady to run rubbish electric heaters off electric. the lady should go sit in the council offices in the warm a refuse to leave untill they sort it out

Council can't sort this out until Monday because 75% of their staff are on the Local Government circuit and don't live in the Swindon area so there's no-one around until then.

Good old Charlie. Growing up in the single-glazed 60s the only heat in the house would likely have been a coal fire in the grate in the living-room. Trudging to school through the snow looking like Michelin Man you had so many layers of clothes on to keep the cold out. And good old Charlie Snr too, hope I'm spritely enough to be able to ride a bike at 96 if I make it that far.

Why is it that people so often fail to use their own initiative.

I've been without heat for two weeks in weather just like this thanks to a dishonest local gas fitter that sent out an unregistered employee who damaged my boiler. A completely avoidable situation and I wasn't given any electric heaters to use. It wasn't fun but life has moments like that.

It's only going to be four days and there are many things that can be done in cold weather to keep warm. Go to a library for a couple of hours and read to your son, take a walk around a local shopping centre that has an indoor children's play area, visit friends and relatives, put the heaters all in one room and close off the rest of the house, use hot water bottles in bed, bake something or make homemade soup to help warm the house. Think for yourself and you'll get by, and next time something like this happens you'll be better able to find a way to deal with it.

I have not heard of a central heating boiler requiring chemicals to fix it before. Must be blocked pipes I suppose ?? I had a problem with my boiler at Christmas when the gas pilot light kept going out. All it needed was a new thermocouple which I bought from Wickes . I looked up all the info I needed to fit it on the internet. It was a fiddly job but had success in the end and no problems since. What joy it was to have a warm house again after so long being in the cold.

You would not get a different level of service from a private contractor such as British Gas.I suspect a part needs to be ordered and that will take a few days to arrive.
The Council have loaned heaters and given money towards the electric.Stop complaining.!!!

Yet another running to the advert with their story!!

Like Charlie I also remember the snow in the 60's. We lived in a bungalow and the drifts completely covered the home from garden to roof. It was like living in an igloo. Did we have central heating - NO. All we had was a coal fire in the living room, warm clothes and hot water bottles. We had to learn to make do.

We are so spoiled now that when something goes wrong peeps don't think for themselves, they run to the papers to complain.

As a private owner I don't get a cheque if my boiler breaks down and I have to wait for repairs to be done but I wouldn't dream of running to the advert to whinge!!

And TinkeyWinkey, I also remember those times. I still use a hot water bottle :o)

I too say good on Charlie and Charlie Snr. Its not often you come across people like that these days. I do wonder how the human race survived so long with the attitudes most people have these days.

With regards to the broken heating system, it could be that the "chemicals" need to be used within certain conditions and its too cold to do it... Just a thought.

I'm sure that there is someone they know in Swindon that can help them out. If you really have absolutely no one that can help you out you should reconsider your social circle.

I wonder if the adver pay people for these stories on council bashing?

I can't believe this is newsworthy even if four year old Kyle has his arms folded in disgust. Someones boiler has broken down - big deal.

The council is fixing it and has covered the additional cost of temporary heating.

£76 seems quite generous given that Ms Mears would have been paying to the run the central heating if it was working. This is more than enough to cover the additional costs - she is probably up on the deal.

As a homeowner, if my boiler fails, I would have to wait for parts to arrive, pay for the repairs, buy temporary heaters and pay for the heating costs.

How will this hopeless benefit scrounging Jeremy Kyle generation survive when the likes of Mr Reynolds are no longer around to support them.

Im sure this cold snap has caused thousands of people issues with heating etc and they have to wait for someone to fix it and then have the pleasure of having to pay for it...... this isnt a story, its a farce !

Lets put all these moaning single mothers who live in council houses into a big field together and let that them moan each other to death. And then put people who would really appreciate a roof over their heads into the houses these waste of space people clearly do not appreciate.

This issue highlights the tyep of scum that are allowed to breed and be homed at tax payers expence. The common working families who work hard for their homes to live a reasonable lifestyle are sick and tired of paying for scum like these gymslip mums who live for free and fire out as many kids as they like. Then they have the gall to moan because they have to do without a boiler for a week before it is fixed for free and replacement heating provided, again for free.

If that brainless chav stopped and thought for a minute she would have realised she is gaining from this minor problem. The money to use the boiler for a week will not be needed and the replacement heating is being provided for no cost. Her home will not be cold and will be paid for by me and you.

Kelly's parents should be responsable financally to look after both of these children not us tax payers.

Whilst none of us enjoy being cold, this lady has electric heaters and money to cover the cost. She is giving single parents a bad name, whinging like this! I am a single parent - after returning to work at the earliest possible opportunity, and saving like mad to buy my own property, I had to buy what I could afford. This was a house with no gas or central heating, only an open fire in the lounge and I used plug-in heaters in the other room. In addition, I worked outdoors in the cold all day, it took around 2hrs for the open fire to heat the room up and my son was 6 when we moved there...and we're both still alive to tell the tale! People do need to toughen up and do things for themselves and not rely on the council (and council-tax payers) every time something goes wrong. I believe she has been adequately provided for in this circumstance. This is not newsworthy.

TinkeyWinkey says...

Mr Don't Whinge...don't under estimate her. She was old enough to have a child. Unfortunately she whinged to the papers and expected sympathy and she hasn't really got it. These things happen and she shouldn't be expecting the tax payer to pay for her bail out!!
