Neighbourhood named as jobless blackspot

Youth unemployment has reached an all time high in Parks. Pictured is Amanda Stewart, 23, who has never had a job Youth unemployment has reached an all time high in Parks. Pictured is Amanda Stewart, 23, who has never had a job

A NEIGHBOURHOOD in Swindon was named yesterday as a blackspot where youth Unemployment has reached emergency levels.

More than one in eight young people aged between 16 and 24 are claiming Jobseekers’ allowance in Parks ward – at a terrible cost to themselves and the country, a report said.

The ward – where 13 per cent of under 24s are claiming the allowance is among 600 blackspots where the jobless count is twice the national average.

The number of “Neets” – those not in employment, education or training, in the blackspots was likely to be as high as one in three, the study by the Association Of Chief Executives Of Voluntary Organisations warned.

Shopping in Cavendish Square yesterday was Amanda Stewart, 23, who has never had a job since leaving school.

The mother-of-two, whose four siblings are also struggling to find work, said: “I’ve applied for all sorts, from bar work to cleaning to shop work but had no luck.

“They keep saying I haven’t got enough experience – but I’ve got four kids which I always clean up after.

“My brother even got turned down for a job at McDonald’s because he wasn’t qualified enough.

“I think the Government needs to do more to help because it’s not like we’ve not been trying.”

South Swindon MP Robert Buckland said: “This report makes some important recommendations, such as collaborative working, and we’ve already recognised that here in Swindon.

“I’m already talking to JobCentre Plus and Forward Swindon about developing new ways in which we can reach out to young unemployed people in Parks and elsewhere in the town.

“It’s important to note there are some good news stories for Swindon in this report too.

“For instance, the proportion of employers taking on young people is twice as high in Swindon as in some other areas.

“I’ve already been in contact with the authors of this report and we’ll be having a meeting to discuss its findings.

“Sadly, youth unemployment has been rising for many years, not just under this Government, and we’re doing everything we can to tackle it.”

Labour leader Jim Grant said: “It is enlightening and concerning that Swindon has been deemed by this report as an unemployment hotspot.

“While some good things are being done to address youth unemployment, like the Plan 500 scheme, more has to be done by the Government and the council.

“Unemployment isn’t a price worth paying and I believe that those communities that have high unemployment can be scarred for a generation.”

A 23 year old tracksuited wearing mum who has never worked is going up against smart looking college and university graduates. Any employer is going to go wiith the latter when selecting new employees. Not rocket science is it? Even Mcdonalds and supermarkets can be choosy nowadays. The mum above will struggle to even get an interview I would think.

Not been trying? You're 23 and never had a job, that's about the least amount of effort you can put in!

Its all very well Jim Grant saying more needs to be done, but this individual is an example of liebours failed generation.

All her senior schooling would be done under liebour! Her years from leaving education until about 20months ago all under liebour.

Jim Grant remind us how your government helped these people, provided opportunity and training.

Ah, that's right, your didn't. You provided a system of throwing money at people in the welfare state, running up enormous debt and economic problems whilst presiding over the biggest economic boom in history.

The biggest thing she can do to improve her chances is voluntary work for a few months as it sends a number of positive messages to prospective employers.

Lovely language skills by the way.

Highworth Lad, if you read again you'll see that Amanda has 4 brothers/sisters and is a mother of 2.

We live in the Parks and my daughter is between 16-24, she has always been "lucky" to find work, as have the children of many of my neighbours.

I feel sorry for her, she's a product of a system which spoon fed her and never challenged her to better herself and now she's unable to compete in a very competitive world.

Skint says...

oops sorry I meant to say that my daughter and the children of many of my neighbours have been lucky to find work so it is by no means every young person in the Parks who finds themselves in this position.

She does actually say she has 4 kids, in which case she will never find a job which pays more than her benefits do anyway. This is the probelm that needs solving and quickly, that of those who have never contributed anything financially to society but have received loads and still do with pretty much no hope of it ever changing.

Young pwople are still finding jobs out there so clearly this is more abot the individual than just the lack of jobs. As one of the agencies said to me not long ago, anyone who really wants a job can get one, but too many are just too choosy and lazy and too unreliable and why work when benefits pay more and dont make you redundant!!!!!

The benefits system helps create these problems by allowing women a few years of free housing and benefits after their baby is born. Once it looks like they're heading for the time when they have to go out and get a job it's easier to get pregnant again and start the couple of years on benefits all over again. It's why so many of them have two or three children, the system makes it a very attractive option.

You are quiet right. What should happen is they will then be told that if they choose to have anymore children then they will not receive any further help. There should only really be three reasons to be on benefits;

1. For those who have worked and paid into the system and then find themselves unemployed or unable to work

2. Young people who have yet to secure employment.

3. Genuine medical reasons

It should never be a lifestyle choice which unfortunately it has become.

Perhaps the young lady should consider volunteer work in a retirement home or charity. Employers would prefer to see this then a long spell of unemployment. I think this would be better then telling employers she cleans up after her kids so she can work in Catering. Also, a workshop on interview techniques and CV writing would be useful. The Jobcentre can refer her to either of the Colleges in Swindon who do workshops of this type.

mrwoo says...

Also many young peoples expectations are clearly wrong.

"My brother even got turned down for a job at McDonald’s because he wasn’t qualified enough. "

That would suggest that she and her brother regard a job at Mcdonalds as beneath them, whereas it would provide an oportunity to gain skills and work ethic.

When I worked at a High St. retailer, come Christmas time, a huge amount of young persons would apply for jobs. Some wouldn't even last a whole shift, let alone a week. They wanted the money, but were reluctant to do the work. Maybe 4 in 20 would stay the course and knuckle down, and they did well & progressed. It wasn't great pay, but they were willing. That was 4-5 years ago. A lot of youngsters now think that hard work is beneath them, but I'm sure there is still that core of young people who will work hard, and they're the ones we don't hear about in the news.

You made your bed love, don't expect any sympathy from us that have grafted since leaving School to put a roof over our heads!

It's a complete mistake to give young people benefits until they have had a job and paid into the system for at least a year and thus earned the right to collect benefits. It works in other countries. The only exception being those who have been in care, and then they should only get enough for the basics and only for a limited time.

If an under age girl has a baby then it should be up to the parents to support both the young mum and her child until she is 18. After that funded child care should be provided so that the young mum can get a job to support her child with the expectation that young mums will either do voluntary work, or work towards achieving basic qualifications to earn their benefits until they find work. It's fundamentally wrong to give something for nothing to anyone who is capable of working.

When parents eventually realise that their dear children will be a burden if they become a teen mum and/or don't get a good education and a job, then perhaps they'll be more inclined to expect and encourage their little darlings to do something with their lives instead of bunking off or making babies just so they can spend their lives being shiftless.

As for the young mum in the picture, a business suit isn't going to be enough, you've got to be someone who appears in every way capable of doing a job and doing it well. That means, clean, well dressed, positive attitude, capable of expressing yourself in proper English, capable of producing an application, CV, cover letter that aren't full errors, etc. None that I have seen complaining that life is unfair for not handing them a job are capable of that. If they don't put in the same effort as those who are getting jobs, why should they expect to get a job?

Until recently, I have been in the unfortunate position of dealing with Jobcentre Plus through short term unemployment, and I have to say that they don't work hard enough or offer enough support to get people back into work. They are basically there to enable people to receive their benefit and nothing else - if there are any jobs suitable, they may do a job search.

However on the point of the Tyre Fitting job - all of the jobs advertised on the Direct Gov website say experience is necessary. Now don't get me wrong, but I can't imagine anyone living in and around Parks has experience in fitting tyres etc.... This will be on the criteria of potential candidates jobsearches - the advisor will ask if they are experienced - if not they do not put anyone forward for it.

I do think some employers have to do more if they want to employ and retain good staff. Tyre fitting is a very skilled job and provides very little scope for the unskilled and unemployed. Too many jobs are asking for relevant experience. I believe that in some instances, that employers need to pull their fingers out their own ***es and be prepared to invest money and time into getting young people into work and training them. No wonder there have been no applications for this position.

Unfortunately youth unemplyoment has been bread into some youngsters as a benefit lifestyle choice thanks to years and years of increased benefit rates, making it less financially beneficial to work than claim benefits. The only way this can be resolved is by not paying such generous benefits and teaching kids that this is NOT an option...
For those who genuinely want to work there are opportunities around but you need to make a positive effort, arrive on time, look smart, be enthusiastic and keep trying. If at first you don't succeed......
Being able to put voluntary work on your CV looks better that sitting on your backside waiting for a job/career to fall into you lap (which won't happen!)
