Arkell's to hold open day for would-be landlords

IF YOU have ever pictured yourself behind the bar of a pub rather than in front of it then Arkell’s want to hear from you.

The Kingsdown-based brewery says there are golden opportunities for people looking for a career in the licensed trade, and they are holding a recruitment day next month to help showcase them.

Brewery director George Arkell said: “Arkell’s Brewery has 100 pubs across Swindon and the south and west of England and we’re always on the look-out for good publicans.

“At this time of year many people consider a change in career, so we’re offering a look at the licensed trade.”

The trade is going through a period of change.

Some might regret that the number of back street pubs selling beer are getting fewer, but breweries and pub owners know that most customers want much more, and this gives tenants the opportunity to turn the old-fashioned pub into a broader business.

“Practically all pubs have multiple income-generating opportunities and ours are no exception,” said George.

“Now a publican can sell beer, food, including take-away, host events and offer overnight accommodation too. Some of our pubs even have hard standing for caravans.”

A number of Arkell’s publicans have seized the opportunity to take on not just one pub, but two.

According to Ross Morgan, who has recently taken on a second Arkell’s tenancy in Wroughton with his wife Dawn: “If you’ve got good staff and suppliers, running two pubs isn’t much more difficult than running one – especially for a brewery like Arkell’s who I find very easy to get on with,” he said.

George said that while they can write a job description for the perfect publican, it does take a certain sort of person.

“We generally know whether they’ve got what it takes when we meet them, and when we do, we give all the help they need,” he said.

“Running a pub requires dedication and investment, but if you’re the right person at the right time of your life, it’s the business.

“We are a 160-year old family brewery with pubs, not a big pubco.

“To us, it’s absolutely all about the people and giving our customers what they want, and that’s the way we want it to stay.”

The recruitment day is at the brewery on March 6 from 1pm until 8pm. For more information on becoming an Arkell’s licensee visit www.arkells.com or call 01793 823026.

Sounds like there could be a few pubs ready for changes.

They have held a number of these over the last few years.

It simply means they are looking to add to their data base of potential tenants.

There are currently 2 tenancies vacant and a managed position.

I do hope the Carpenters Arms is one they are looking for new management as the place is a s**t hole at the moment. And there are a few others that need some attention too.

You could be right.

A lot of pubs in and around Swindon could do with new management.

Perhaps they should close those that have no business so they can concentrate on those that are viable...

Just a thought...

Pubs where the landlord spends more time on here than serving customers should go on the change of management list.

After a certain landlords vindictive behaviour, I feel inclined to make such a suggestion to the brewery

Seems like Mr Cameron is beating the drums on beer prices as to the high cost to the NHS of binge drinking--another blow to the pubs.

Good point I Too.

I think Arkell's would want their pubs run by pleasant motivated people who attract customers rather than the lazy opinionated sort that spend their time making enemies, presiding over empty car parks, and allowing their beer to age in the pipes.

That would certainly rule out most of those who have already posted on this thread, JAN.

Assuming JAN you are referring to me, strange how the reality is quite different we use Pins to ensure freshness, more work but better quality beer, which was applauded only last night by a new long stay guest a Yorkshireman, they know a bit about beer.

I'm sure your beer must need an extraordinary amount of work to make it taste half decent Robbo.

Amazing then that you can still spend 95% of your day trolling on here.

Are you saying swindonians know nothing about beer? Of course you would not miss an opportunity to tell everyone how busy you are. Anyway if Cameron has his way more pubs will be closing.

Well if us Swindonions know so little about beer that only a Yorkshire man can have a decent opinion, then maybe we should boycott these Arkells pubs and contact Arkells stating that one of their less popular pubs bar babysitter is slagging off their customers in a public place.

towney, I'm sure someone at the brewery will have read the comment, and will see that I did no such thing.

Many local people praise Arkells beers but others seem to relish slagging it off, as comments on these pages frequently show.

There are many good real ales across the UK, Arkells happens to be one of the best being a genuine 'craft beer' not a production real ale.

It is testament to that quality that a Yorkshireman should praise it, not a reflection on anyone else, except of course in the minds of those with ulterior motive.

So now the Bored Barman claims that his employers spend all day reading his comments.

Yeah right. I'll ask them.

I Too facts are not your strong point are they.

1. They do not employ me.
2. They employ a media person whose job it is to, well, monitor the media.
