Over all the years of watching Swindon I’ve seen ridiculous penalties, red cards, free kicks etc. etc. go against Town so it was refreshing to see us benefiting from a referee’s decision for a change last night against playoff rivals Shrewsbury Town.

In the first hour of last nights match Town were played off the park, no Swindon fan can disagree with that statement.

The team looked like eleven random blokes had stolen the first team shirts and were just pretending to be the real deal.

Then that big slice of good fortune was given to Town when Alan McCormack managed to escape with no punishment for a foul in the penalty box.

After that incident the game turned completely in Towns favour as sub Alan Connell scored a brace to earn Town another valuable three points.

As the full time whistle went we knew thanks to results elsewhere and Town’s incredible winning run which now stands at eight games, the club was deservedly back to the summit of the League Two table.

If we can keep the team fit and performing to the same level seen in the last 30 minutes of last night success for this team is guaranteed for this season.

Before the game last night Town managed to do some transfer business which involved a striker leaving on loan for the rest of the season.

Lukáš Magera who joined the club with a big reputation and an international caps to his name unfortunately never settled in the first team at any point this season.

He scored just the one goal at Port Vale but after that he never showed the manager consistently he deserved a first team spot on a regular basis, this move makes sense for both parties and I hope he finds success back at his old club Baník Ostrava.

With the business end to the season starting to get closer it’s encouraging to see how many games Town have left to play at home this season.

Out of the sixteen league games remaining nine of them will be played at the County Ground, giving us a huge advantage in the promotion race.

Most of these home games will be played over the next six weeks with Town only playing two away games out of the next eight.

Our run of home games continues this Saturday as Town welcomes playoff chasing Accrington Stanley to Swindon.

After his game changing performance last night Alan Connell should be recalled to the first team to replace Billy Bodin, who has had a good start to his young Town career but I think will be more useful as an impact sub and an occasional starter.

Hopefully Paolo can include Simon Ferry again after his recent illness has kept him sidelined recently, new signing Lee Cox has done a good job since his arrival but having the partnership of Smith and Ferry in the middle will be key on Saturday.

If we can put on the same performance that humbled Crawley a couple of weeks ago there is no reason why we can’t extend this winning run to nine games and tighten our hold on the League Two title.
