TORCHBEARERS across the town are getting ready to light up Swindon as they prepare for the big day.

Runners have been receiving their outfits and given their times and locations of when and where they will be running next Wednesday.

One of the lucky few is Dan McNaughton, Year 3 teacher at Swindon Academy, who is set to carry the torch through the streets of Old Town.

Five of his pupils and their families will be in the crowd cheering him on, as well as his daughters Holly and Evie, and he said he can’t wait to take part.

“It’s going to be unbelievable. My eldest daughter Holly is three-and-a-half so hopefully she will remember it when she grows up,” he said.

“I applied through Coca-Cola last summer and I gave them some details about some injuries I have had with my knees and told them about some charity work I have done. I also told them about half marathons I did in 2010.”

The 34-year-old was selected by a judo athlete, Sophie Johnstone, who was on the panel of judges.

One of Dan’s pupils Illyssa Williams, seven, said: “I feel very happy for him because not everyone gets to carry the torch. I felt really happy when he told us.”

Lesley-Ann Abraham, eight, made a card with Olympic mascots on and gave it to her teacher to congratulate him.

And Rhys Browne, eight, said he would bring chocolate in for his teacher if he does a good job.

Agata Spasik, eight, said: “I feel happy for Mr McNaughton and I think Mr McNaughton feels proud. I was so excited when I found out, it’s not every day you find out that your teacher is going to be carrying the Olympic Torch.”

Disabled Basketball player Ben Fox has also received his outfit for the day, which is primarily white but also features gold shards, that organisers say are ‘accenting the energy of the Olympic flame’ at the shoulder and neckline.

He will be taking possession of the torch at 12.45pm at Lime Kiln and his mum Carol Hearne has said all the family will be there watching.

She said: “I am so proud of what Ben has achieved despite what he has been through.

“We are all really excited about the day, it will be brilliant.

“I think the outfits are really smart and I like the way there is a gold bit running up the arm so when the torch is handed over to the next person there is a continuous line of gold.”
