ONE of Swindon’s finest steam engines has been enchanting the crowds up north following an extensive overhaul.

The 75029 Green Knight was one of the stars of the popular North Yorkshire Moors Railway Spring Gala this weekend. It was pictured passing under the Larpool Viaduct, near Whitby, on the final day of the event.

The engine, which is a BR 4-6-0 Standard Class 4MT, was built at the Swindon Railway Works in 1956 before being saved from the scrapyard by wildlife artist David Shepherd in the late 1960s.

The Green Knight was initally based at the Longmoor Steam Railway, until it was moved to the East Somerset Railway, based in Shepton Mallet, in 1973.

The railway sold the engine on in the late 1990s and it is now a staple feature of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

The Green Knight only recently returned to service following an extensive two-year transformation.

It was one of 80 similar locomotives, but was one of the few painted in green and fitted with a large double chimney.
