TWO white flowering cherry trees were planted in Queen’s Park yesterday to mark the Jubilee.

The trees stand at the entrance to the remembrance garden, which was opened by the Queen when she was Princess Elizabeth back in 1950 in memory of those who lost their lives in the Second World War.

Mayor of Swindon Coun Ray Ballman and the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire Sarah Rose Troughton had the honour of planting the trees while onlookers waved Union Jack flags.

Coun Ballman said: “It is a wonderful way to mark the Queen’s Jubilee.

“I hope the trees survive and continue to grow and I hope the Queen continues her long reign.”

Two more trees will be planted in the garden later this year.

Lord Lieutenant Troughton said she was delighted to be involved in the celebration.

“I am very proud to be involved, it is the first jubilee tree I have planted and I am delighted that it is here in Swindon,” she said.

“I am very much looking forward to the jubilee.”
