A WOMAN has hit out at thieves who scaled a fence to steal her much-needed moped – and is appealing for any information that might get it back.

Security guard Helen Carry, 28, said she awoke on Wednesday to find her gold Yamaha Neos scooter had vanished from where she parked it behind her home in William Street.

The thief had scaled a 7ft fence and hot-wired the moped. But Helen believes that the real target was her Gilera DNA motorcycle, which had a faulty starter motor.

“Someone climbed the fence and nicked my little scooter. It’s so frustrating because I need it to get to work,” she said.

“There were scooters parked out in the street so why climb a seven foot fence? What I think they were after was my motorbike but because it wouldn’t start they took the moped – they would’ve got more value from stealing a wing mirror off the bike than that old thing. I reported it to police and then a couple of hours afterwards I saw somebody ride past on it out the front of my house, as if they were taunting me.

“It might not be worth much but I need it and I’m just angry they think they can come into my property and take something that does not belong to them.”

The scooter is believed to have been stolen between 11pm on Tuesday and 6am on Wednesday and police have appealed for information from the public. A Wiltshire Police spokesman said: “We have received a report of a stolen moped that was taken from a property in William Street.

“At this time our enquiries are continuing to identify the offenders and we would like to take this opportunity to appeal for help from the public.

“In particular, officers are keen to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen or heard anything suspicious.”
