STUDENTS at The Commonweal School have shown themselves to be champions through and through.

More than 370 students and parents took part in the annual prize-giving ceremony.

Swindon Advertiser editor and school patron Mark Waldron attended to present a special award.

The secondary school in Old Town has special status as a centre of excellence for performing arts and, before the ceremony, the school concert band and a medley of soloists entertained the crowd.

The pieces included a rendition of the classic swing number Almost Like Being In Love performed by Matt Harris, 13, on trumpet, and Nick Weaver, school technician, on vocals.

The quality performances were thanks to the efforts of the school's new music department, Alison Sutcliffe, head of music, and Helen Clements, her second in command.

Alison said: "We're really excited to be part of Commonweal. The students and staff are fantastic."

Among this year's winners were Marianne Victor, who got the prize for drama, Hannah Grant, who received the Jack Ackroyd Award for Artistic Excellence, Nathaniel Wand who won the Bacchus Cup for mathematics and Tom Wakelam, who was presented with the Fairclough Prize for Music.

Headteacher Keith Defter said that students not only excel in lessons but many are national champions.

He said: "The following are just an example of our talents - Elliot Read is in the under-16s English Rugby Union Squad, Alicia Hazzard is in the English women's football squad and Louise Hunt is six times winner of the London Mini Marathon for the disabled and is also fourth in the world in wheelchair tennis."

Fifteen-year-old Eloise Harding, winner of the plaque for dance, said: "I am honoured and surprised to have won this award but it goes to show that hard work pays off."

The Swindon Advertiser sponsored the Performing Arts Award, which was won by 16-year-old Ravneek Bains.

Editor Mark Waldron presented her with the award.

He said: "The Swindon Advertiser is proud to celebrate the achievements of all our local schoolchildren. We regularly feature the excellent work being produced under Commonweal's status as a performing arts college so were delighted to sponsor this prize. My congratulations go to our first winner Ravneek.

"Having been a special guest at the prize-giving ceremony it was a pleasure to see the work of so many students across all subjects being recognised."

Ravneek said she was shocked but delighted.

"It was nice to be given an award for something that has gradually developed over the years in the same way the school has developed while I have been here," she said.

She is now studying dance, economics, politics and maths at New College, and would love to become a dancer with an academic slant, such as representing dancers' rights.
