A MAN has died after a car crash on Marlborough Road in the early hours of this morning.

Emergency services were called to the incident which took place at 1.20am.

It is thought the driver of the car managed to walk free from the wreckage.

The road was closed for six hours along with neighbouring roads Broome Manor Road and Coate Water Road.

A spokeswoman for Wiltshire Police said: "A silver coloured Vauxhall Corsa was being driven eastbound along Marlborough Road, Swindon towards Coate Water.

"The driver, for reasons unknown, lost control of the vehicle and it left the carriageway to the nearside, colliding with a tree.

"As a result of the collision a 19 year old passenger in the vehicle sustained multiple injuries and died at the scene.

"The road was closed for 6 hours to allow for collision investigation work, the recovery of the vehicle and repairs to the road surface.

"Police are appealing for any witnesses to the collision who have not already identified themselves, or who may have seen the vehicle involved prior to the collision to make themselves known and contact Pc Scott Hill of the Serious Collision Investigation Team on 101 or via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

A spokesman for Great Western Ambulance Service said: "We received a 999 call from a member of the public in Marlborough Road to report a single vehicle collision.

"There were two occupants of the car, both young males. It appears one of them got out of the car and went back to help the passenger, which is how he sustained burns to his hands.

"He was taken to Great Western Hospital for treatment but his injuries are not thought to be serious."
