Height barrier at recycling

A height barrier has been put up at the recycling centre, at Cheney Manor Industrial Estate, in a bid to stop the illegal tipping of trade waste.

It restricts large vehicles, vans and 4x4s over two metres high. Residents legitimately visiting the centre in a vehicle over the limit will still be able to dispose of their waste using a permit.

This has been in place for several weeks already. Why has it taken so long to reach the Adver?

I can't remember what I read on the sign at the tip when I was there several weeks ago but I thought it said that the permits can be requested at the tip.

I was also thinking that had been in place several weeks; possibly a couple of months.

I think the permits are available at the tip, but also see to recall that large vehicles are only allowed 10 times a year or something!

I agree the barrier has been there for at least a month, as luck would have it my 4 by 4 JUST fits under the barrier so not a problem for me.
I am supprised that you are not asked to prove you are a Swindon rate payer to use this facility.

The town's allotments are used as dumping zones......what is the council going to do about it?

From 1 April 2012, any householder using a vehicle over 1.9m in height will be asked to tip in a separate area and will require a permit. This permit will allow 12 visits to the site each year and must be presented each time the site is visited in a large vehicle. You can obtain a permit on your first visit after the 1st April. Just bring your Council Tax invoice (sent out in March), this will prove entitlement and a permit will be issued.

Vehicles above 1.9 Metres are permitted to tip at the following times:

•Monday- Friday: 8am-5pm.
•Saturday: 8am- 12pm.
•Sunday: No tipping allowed.
