HUNDREDS of people are expected to head to the town centre tomorrow as a summer of fun and games at Wharf Green comes to a close.

The Last Night Of The Proms will be shown on the big screen as the town marks the end of summer festivities, which have included the Olympics and Paralympics being played live and various sporting taster sessions in honour of the Games.

Trampolining, netball, athletics and wheelchair basketball are just some of the sports that have been showcased there over the summer.

Simon Jackson, the CEO of inSwindon BID, which organises events at the Big Screen, said: “The Last Night Of The Proms has always been a fantastic way to end our summer events programme, and we’re looking forward to another great night on Saturday.

“The weather is set fair, we’ve got a wide range of refreshments available, and the Mid-West Big Band always build the atmosphere brilliantly before the show starts, so it’s sure to be a lovely evening.

“It’s been a great summer to be British with the jubilee and our Olympic and Paralympic successes, and this is a wonderfully patriotic way to bring it to an end.”

The evening, which is in its fifth year, gets under way at 6.30pm with pre-show entertainment before the performance begins at 7.30pm.

The area under the Big Screen has been transformed into a hub of sporting activity over the last few weeks, which will continue from 11am until 3pm tomorrow.

Coun Garry Perkins , the cabinet member for regeneration and culture, said he was pleased with how successful the events at Wharf Green had been over the summer.

“It is great to see Wharf Green with the Big Screen being used by so many residents.” he said.

“It has highlighted the Olympics and allowed a lot of residents to get involved in sport. It has also enabled a lot of our local groups to showcase their expertise, which hopefully will enhance the future of sport in Swindon.

“I would like to continue events such as this in Wharf Green in the future."

Len Morphew of the Mid-West Big Band said: “Playing in Wharf Green is fun, and we are looking forward to playing before the Last Night Of The Proms. We’ll be playing lots of classic big band songs that everyone can sing along with, so I’d encourage everyone who hasn’t got a ticket to sign up.”
