Pub burgled after thief hid inside it

A THIEF hid in a bar until it closed for the night and stole a large amount of cash in the early hours of the morning.

The incident took place at about 3.15am on Saturday, July 8 at the Spot nightclub in Godwin Court.

The police, who have so far been unable to identify a suspect, are appealing for information from the public.

A spokesman for the Spot said they believed the culprit had entered the bar while it was busy with clubbers and then managed to hide unnoticed until after staff had finished clearing up and had shut down for the night.

He added: “Someone had hidden in the building and there was a theft – we don’t want to say too much but feel it has been followed up by the police quite poorly – particularly the fact it has taken seven weeks to send out a press release. I have expressed our feelings to them.”

PC Simon Akers, of the Swindon Response Team, said: “We are appealing for information after a high value burglary took place at The Spot nightclub, in Godwin Court. The incident took place at approximately 3.15am on Saturday, July 8.

“A large amount of cash was taken from the premises and police believe the suspect then left the nightclub via the alleyway by the Spot Bar leading to Barclays Bank.

“Police are interested to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time and saw or heard anything suspicious, including people entering or leaving the building or loitering around outside.”

A police spokesman said: “When considering a public appeal, the investigating officer must first decide whether one is necessary and secondly, that it will not jeopardise the investigation.

“Many investigations cannot be publicly disclosed for this reason.

“All lines of inquiry are fully considered and it might be that a public appeal is not the best route at a certain point in the investigation.

“Wiltshire Police is unable to comment on specific, ongoing investigations.”
