Council to discuss plans for multi-million pound relief road

SWINDON Council will tomorrow discuss plans to build a multi-million pound relief road for the massive Eastern Villages development to reduce possible future congestion in Covingham and along Oxford Road.

Couns Dale Heenan and Richard Hurley (both Con, Covingham and Dorcan) want the full council to back their motion for plans for a road running from Acorn Bridge, on the A420, to either Dorcan Industrial Estate or ideally Commonhead roundabout.
 

The pair are asking for it to be written into the council’s final version of the Core Strategy, to be published in October, which sets out the vision of Swindon’s future development.

They also want officers to cost the proposal and review all of the available funding for the Eastern Villages infrastructure and open talks with Government to provide any shortfall. The suggestion to join with Dorcan Industrial Estate is expected to require a bridge over the A419.

In other motions set to be discussed, Coun Cindy Matthews (Lab, Lydiard and Freshbrook) and Coun Steve Wakefield (Lab, Mannington and Western) will put forward a proposal for cabinet to consider establishing an allotments co-operative, which will manage and collect the rents from the users of council allotment sites. Coun Matthews believes this would cut waiting lists and improve facilities.

Coun Mark Dempsey (Lab, Walcot and Park North) and Coun Neil Heavens (Lab, Liden, Eldene and Park South) will also pitch a motion, following the recent delays in the collection of green waste, requesting the cabinet to produce a report outlining action to improve the service.
