TWO brothers have set off on a wet and wild adventure around Mexico in memory of their dad.

Dan and Marcus Fylan-Smith have joined six others for a five-week paddling expedition to Veracruz, Mexico.

The pair flew out yesterday and are planning to paddle the most beautiful rivers in the region, raising money and awareness for the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust, which helped their father David Smith who died of a brain tumour in 2010.

Dan, 32, from Shaw, is the former manager of Woods Cafe Bar in Old Town, and said the pair were excited about the prospect of tackling some of the most difficult rivers.

He said: “We have always wanted to go to South America to paddle and this is a great experience for us.

“In the last two years we have been on two trips to Europe taking in rivers in Switzerland, Germany and Italy, but in Mexico it will be completely different.

“Our dad passed away in 2010 after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2008.

“The Samantha Dickson Trust were really helpful and provided the necessary care and helped the family at the same time so we wanted to raise some money to show our appreciation of them.

“We have raised £400 so far and are hoping to raise around £1,000.”

The pair also have a growing audience for their Kayaking films on YouTube with 13,000 hits and have had their films played at Kendal, Keswick, Calgary and Banff Mountain Film Festivals.

They will be filming another two films in Mexico using GoPro’s and a Pentax camera, which have been donated to them for the trip.

The rivers they will be kayaking through will vary in difficulty and length. The longest, the River Verdes, is 150km long.

They will be hoping their trip goes better than their last one when he van they were travelling in broke down and forced them to return home early.
